Hey,

My first ever DakkaDakka post, been reading for a while, but figured i'd make use of the vast experience on here.

Having returned to Warhammer 40k recently after many MANY years away i have well and truly got the bug.

During the end of 5th i was playing Necrons and managed to build myself a nice 2500 points worth, including some of the new models released. I love my Necrons and they will still be getting used, but i feel that the army is, dare i say, finished. So with the release of 6th ed, like a lot of players i figured, new rules need a new start and a new army.

After playing what i feel is a very "safe" army tactically and one that i feel i have mastered vs my regular opponents, i feel like a change up. Major points and deciding factors can be found listed below.

1) Not a huge fan of SM, too common amongst my regular opponents, however i would consider a "specialist" SM army.

2) Preference towards assault, or at least assault viable, having played my necrons as a shooty army.

3) Embrace the fluff! I'm a fluff lover.... so good fluff is a bonus, i rate good quality fluff over competition.

4) Modelling challenge - i found the necrons very quick and easy to paint and would like my new army to provide attention off the game table.

5) Not daemons. Because quite frankly, i don't like them

My regular opponents have the following Armies covered.

IG - Cadian Mech
CSM - Khorne/Nurgle
BA
GK
DE
Nids

Any opinions, suggestions or advice is welcomed.

Well, damn. I was going to suggest Blood Angels, Dark Eldar and Tyranids for assault but then you mentioned they're already covered. Not leaving us a lot of choice...! :p
You COULD always go the specialist route and pick one of these armies, but with a twist. For instance, an all Sanguinary or Death Company army.

While not strictly assaulty, an Inquisition-based Grey Knights army could be interesting - you have some interesting options such as Death Cult or Eversor assassins. You would have to back these up with some firepower to be useful, however.

Thanks for your response, The BA player in our group has had no end of dramas with choosing his setup and thus i've been put of them a fair amount. However that said, i will borrow his codex (i've just asked him right now!) and have a look.

One other specialist list i looked at was going SW Loganwing Terminator army - was slightly cautious about it though due to the 6th Ed rules which state you must have 50% on the table, but going off the fluff for SW they don't deepstrike so would be arriving by drop pod. So might still work for a 100% drop pod assault, not sure.

I've also thought of Orks, only because i love the comedic value of playing Orks and i've never played a "horde" army.

That said i will digest your comments and have a deeper think, its such an important choice when you consider the money we throw around for this hobby!

Go Orks, orks are very open to conversion, and they are a very assault oriented army

i am extremely tempted by Orks, they look great fun to play and in addition they are pretty decent by all accounts. I wouldn't know where to start with them mind!

I'd stick with the necrons, since 6th has put them in a whole new class and drastically changed how they work.

If you're dead set on a new project, try Deathwing. It's a finesse assault army with a very low model count that lends itself to spending a lot of time modeling and painting each and every warrior. They're also one of the more iconic and visually distinct units in the game.

i suppose with Deathwing it gives me some more time think about my decision as i wouldn't do it until the new codex comes out (if ever!). Your right about the modelling too, lots of potential with magnets and poses, as well as a challenging paint scheme.

Lots of food for thought, Thanks for the input guys.

I'd vote Orks.

They're a really fun army with many collecting and modelling options and a great amount of freedom to just do whatever the hell you want

You can paint em any colour (although green for skin is generally required), you can scratch build things and still have it fit the character of your army, you can go crazy with conversions etc etc etc

CSM.

If you want an assaulty army, you can't go with a horde army anymore, as 6th ed really beat up on horde assault armies. Elite assault armies can be made to work, though, like GK, BA, or CSM.

Meanwhile, second only to orks, CSM has the best modelling opportunities. Mutations, ancient and archaic wargear, spiky bitz, and some well-entrenched fluff to modelling options gives you a LOT to work with. CSM has always been a customized force, and it hasn't lost anything over time with this regard.

There is a lot of good fluff out there, but we're going to have a hard time helping you out on this one without knowing what kind of fluff you're looking for or are generally attracted to.

I know someone at your store is already playing CSM, but your other best choices are BA and GK, which are also already taken. The only one that fits the criteria and is also not currently played would probably be SW, but I myself (and a lot of others), find the fluff detestable. If you don't (also like many others), then you might consider it. Also, I'd note that a BA army is a BA army, and a GK army is a GK army, but there is a staggering amount of variety in CSM. A bright pink mech slaanesh army will look and play absolutely nothing like a mottled green puss-filled foot nurgle list.

Furthermore, CSM is on the verge of getting a new codex, so you will be able to buy a bunch of models right before they become more expensive, and will probably get a whole host of cool new options.

I think every response on here has a good point/argument, but i think having thought about it i will continue with my 'crons until the arrival of the new codex(s?).

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to reply, you really helped me think through this and probably saved me a fair amount of £££'s in the process!

Cheers
