As far as i can tell the Alpha Legion, (Heresy era or Pre-Heresy) would not have carried around banners in battle

What would the imaginative people here on Dakka recommend as a replacement for banners in a unit of Alpha Legionaires?

Several years ago I saw a pretty neat Alpha Legion army. As opposed to painting the figures all in the Alpha paint scheme - he sort of used a reverse Deathwatch scheme.

Each Squad was painted up as a different chapter's marines. However, in place of the chapter's standard shoulder - he had the Alpha legion shoulder. The banner which he used was based on the Ultramarine chapter banner (I think it was from the Insignium Astartes book). He replaced the marine with one which had the Alpha marine should marking and the Tyranid was replaced with someone who looked the part of Calgar (big red gloves and all). If you didn't look closely - you would probably miss it.

demonic idols and icons instead of banners?

I read this post earlier today, totally forgot about it and then suddenly, out of nowhere like the legion themselves, an idea came into my head. I'm not sure on how to pull it off other than maybe tinfoil, but how about a mirror?

As for the daemonic ideas, i am doing the Legion up as either pre or during the Heresy, so no daemons would be around them at that point.

The reverse deathwatch idea is unreal, too bad i've already started....

Some sort of Hydra/Letter Alpha/Chain motifs.
