I've been looking into this method of painting to help blend my paint without leaving lines. However I'm not sticking my brush in my mouth. I don't care if the paints are safe or not. Is it possible to do this method with water or some other alternative?

Wet sponge. Same deal - less calories.

What do you mean? whip the brush on the sponge?

Yep.

There isn't anything in particular in saliva which will add a beneficial property to paint. You are basically just adding/maintaining moisture. You don't want to just use a cup of water (though you can with certain paints) as excessive amounts of moisture will ruin the particular technique.

The exact technique will vary some - but basically you use one brush to effectively transfer paint - then you use a second clean but moist brush to move it about (and create the transition surface). Too much water and it becomes a mess. I use a sponge which is sitting in a reservoir of water (just a small dish). It stays wet and keeps the brush wet and ready to go.

Do you just leave the brush to sit one the sponge or just swip it across the sponge?

Just leave it resting on the sponge. Keeps the moisture ready for when you need it. Otherwise you can set it to the side...soak it when you are ready and then wipe it across the sponge to go.
