Magical weapons must be used when possible instead of mundane weapons. Special weapons must be used instead of hand weapons when possible.

High Elf Prince with the Star Lance uses its magical lance in the first round of combat.

In the second round of combat Lances cannot be used according to the lance rules, you must switch to your hand weapon.

Your hand weapon cannot be used if you have a great weapon, so the Prince would switch to his mundane great weapon?

Is this right?

Change and change until Change is our master, for nothing neither God nor mortal can hold that which has no form. Change is the constant that cannot be changed.

No game of chess can be won without pawns, and this may prove to be a very long game.

Yeah, thats how it would work.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Wait you paid for a star lance and a great weapon? Can you even do that? Or does it merely say that magic weapons supersede mundane ones

Magic weapons are purchased seperatly from mundane equipment. The rules mearly say you MUST use a magic weapon if you have one.

Brets run into this issue as well with their magic lances. Our club has always played that, since the rules require you to use your lance at all times, it is the "more specific rule" and it overrides the general rule that you are not allowed using your lance. Accordingly, in this case the elf would auto-hit at all times (the most common example where I play is the heartwood lance, which rerolls wounds).

I recognize that this argument could go either way due to the poor way the rules are written, but that's how we play it and it seems fair given the cost of some of these weapons when compared to other weapons that get to be used permanently.

Or you could just play what the Brettonnian magic item list says which is thus.
1. A Brettonnian character can choose to use his mundane lance over a magic weapon on the turn he charges
2. A Brettonnian character can use his magic lance every round of combat not just the one they charged (obviously the +2 str bonus is still charge only).
