Just wandering if anyone had any tips for a reasonably new Dark Angels and Tyranids player...anything would be appreciated.

For Tyranids, try an all reserve list. They are fun and competitive.

They're also not allowed in sixth edition.

Huh? I haven't really looked into the reserve rules, mind explaining?

Ok, all reserve lists: Only UP TO one half of your units (rounding up) may be placed in reserves. Units that MUST be placed into reserve (and any unit embarked on these) do not count towards that limit. And it is theoretically possible to do it for Nids, just not worth it anymore. Youd have to SPod everythin outside of HQ, and have your one HQ unit (probably a Flyrant) come in from reserve.

But, on a more positive note, Tyranid advice!

Take psykers! Tervigons are absolutely disgusting, in every way. Psychic, buffing synapse scoring units that make more scoring units, and with a bit of luck can be T9! 9! NINE! Heavy Bolters? Screw that! STOP! CANT TOUCH THIS!!!!
(wow, Im sorry... but theyre good... ok I ll go now...)
Otherwise, Tyrants are good bets. There are three ways to run them. 1. Wings, 2. Armored shell, 3. Swarmlord. Anything else is wasted potential.
Broodlords and Zoanthropes are also psykers, but I personally like them less. Some people do seem to be having success though, to be fair.

Other than that? Hive Guard are great. Missiles that ignore cover, and are Toughness 6.
Ymgarls get a mention for being one of three units that can assault out of reserve, and rending, plus other fun stuff.

If you want, you can take a "horde" direction. You can either go Termagants or Homagaunts, your call. Either way, find a way to get them Furious Charge and Poisoned, either through upgrades or Tervigons. (Gargoyles also apply to hordes. But, theyre fast!)

Trygons are generally considered better than Fexes, but the DakkaFex has some uses. Mileage may vary. I personally use no Heavy Support anymore.

Best units per slot:

HQ: Tyrant, Tyranid Prime
Elites: Hive Guard, Ymgarls, Zoanthropes (Venomthropes I like, not all people do.)
Troops: Id recomend everything except Warriors. If you like them, go Shrikes. *Tervigons are great and unlocked by gants as troops*
FA: Gargoyles, Shrikes with Lash Whip and Bonesword
HS: Our weakest slot in my mind... bare Trygons, Dakkafex, and Biovores are all good though.

More to the point on all reserve lists - even if you manage to do it, if you reach the end of a game turn with nothing on the table, you automatically lose. So basically you'd let your opponent set up, move one turn, and win the game, sine you won't be able to get anything on the table until turn 2.
