Well, to be honest go with the models you like. But in my opinion, the poor 'Nids are difficult to play with their current Codex while the Orks have better options.

well they are both horde, and cometativy orks are a bit better than nids, but still not a top army. They also have more personality behind them as well, but go with what models you like more.

As others have said, go with the models you like.

This is doubly important when considering Orks or Nids, since you'll be building and painting a lot of models. Either army can make a decent list and play competitively in 6th edition, but always remember you'll be spending a lot of time in game and out of games with the models, so make sure you like them.

Go to your LGS and get a consensus for what other people are playing. If you like both enough that you can't decide, try to fill in what is seen less/not seen at your LGS. Your army will feel more cool when you have unique stuff to bring to the table, which I'm guessing is a factor to you as you havent picked an Imperial army.

Tyranids do have Carnifexen and dice tanks in their birthday suits though . . . just sayin

Although I play Guard, I'd go with 'nids just because they are just so much more badass fluff wise compared to orks. Plus the tyranid models are awesome!
And if you want to see how to play them well, I recommend looking up some battle reports on youtube. There are some great strategies for them.

Tyranids are more aesthetically pleasing in my mind, and I would also say are better Games-Wise IF you know what youre doing. Both can do horde rather well, Id just pick Nids (coughbiasedcough) because of the sheer awesome that is the Tervigon.

The endless hordes of Hormagaunts thing has been gone for many years and they've also been nerfed in 6e :( You're gonna see Gargoyles being their replacement. Anyhow, sorry to go off topic!

Both have good and interesting models so on that front pick your favourite. Regarding the army, because both will entail a lot of money and time with so many models I would make sure you have a decent understanding of their dexes (unless you completely do not care) and how they play/what units work well/ how they work in 6th before buying anything. The worst thing would be picking one, buying models and dex and later finding out the models you want to use don't work well or the army you envision in fluff does not play that way in practice (of course unless you don't care about any of that).

The answer clearly is to have a bunch of tyranid lictors camoflaging themselves by holding up wooden signposts with WAAAAGH! painted red on it.

Take Orks and run looted nids. There is a picture of a looted carnifex in the gallery if I remember correctly. I kinda want to collect a small ork army just to convert looted stuff.

Orks, so many more options for a cool looking unique army than with Nids.

IMO Orks got nerfed by 6th and Tyranids got buffed, but Orks may still be slightly better. But I'd say both are decent army choices.

There is an army floating around that is done with almost all "looted MC's". Gaovinni has a point about doing both. The single biggest draw back for nid's is the lack of allies and the option to model other armies to work with them as "counts as". Ork's on the other hand are a converts dream army becuase well, Ork's can Orkify anything.
