Subject: Running an escalation league with narrative - HELP PLEASE
Hey everyone, I'm trying to start up an escalation league to ease a few newer 40k players into our gaming group as well as provide a great chance for everyone to get a firmer grasp on the 6th ed rules. I'm going to paste the rules for the league I have written up below in a spoiler if anyone has any constructive criticism or suggestions, I am all ears. One issue I'm wavering on is scoring, perhaps a fixed number per game won/played or actually tallying up all victory points to provide a blowout win more weight in scoring? Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Spoiler:
Journeyman League
Slow Grow League Overview
Over the course of several months, players compete for prizes by earning league points. Each week, rules are set to restrict the size and composition of players’ armies. This will help encourage an environment that is enjoyable for players who may take longer to become accustomed to the rules of the game. This league is designed for the release of the Warhammer 40k 6th edition rulebook in order to allow all players to fully grasp the changed ruleset in addition to allowing players to either expand upon an existing army or begin collecting an all new army.
Model Restrictions:
There are no model restrictions to speak of. Conversions and third party models are acceptable and encouraged, as are any Games Workshop models and Forge World models. If you see a particularly cool model from another line, such as Mantic Games or even Warhammer Fantasy and want to include it in your army, feel free to do so as long as you can make the model WYSIWYG and the model fits a particular unit in the army.
Prizes
Prizes are awarded for participation as well as stellar play and sportsmanship.
Awards:
o Best Painted Award – Monthly, Voted on by Generals
• Two Pots of Citadel Paints of winner’s choice
o Worst Painted Award – Monthly, Voted on by Generals
• A can of Krylon Primer in Black, Gray, or White
o Phase Champion – Monthly, Overall Points Leader
• $20 towards a future purchase for army
o League Champion – End of League Play, Points Leader
• A transport bag and foam to carry your new army!
Scoring:
Players earn League Points by playing league format games. For each league game played, the player calculates all victory points earned during that game and records those points on the score sheet. This is the number of league points earned for that game.
Players also earn League Points for painting models in the faction they are playing in the league. For a painted model to score League Points, it must meet the requirements listed in the painting requirements. Players will earn ten (10) League Points for each phase if every model in their army list for the phase is painted and based at the end of the phase.
Tiebreakers
If two players are tied for League Points, a final playoff game with random mission and deployment will determine the winner.
Forces:
• First month: 500 points. Force requirements are 1 HQ, 1 Troop. Normal maximums.
• Subsequent months: add 250 points to your current total. Normal Force Organizations.
• Between matches, no list modifications may be made.
• Between phases (months), each General may modify their list at their discretion, but remember, models must be painted!
• The League is intended to run 5 months, ending with a total of 1500 points.
• Players joining after the start of the League will begin at the current points level.
• Roster sheets showing exactly where all of your points were spent are required. They don't have to be official sheets, but must be organized and legible.
• No proxies are allowed, but conversions are encouraged. 90% of army list must be WYSIWYG.
• All standard Warhammer 40k codex rules are legal, as are White Dwarf rules supplements. Imperial Armour rules are also accepted for this league, provided it is 40k approved in the respective Imperial Armour book in which the unit is found.
• Allies are allowed, provided all other rules are followed, within standard force org requirements.
• Fortifications are allowed as well, but if included at all in an army list, may not be removed for any future matches.
Painting:
For a model to count for League Points it must be primed, basecoated, and painted with a reasonable diversity of color (minimum 3 colors). Individual elements of the miniature must be distinguishable by color or shading. For instance, flesh must be a different color than hair or clothing; metal should be a different color than leather. In order for a model to be considered completely painted, it must also be based. Quality of painting will not be imperative for panting score, only that each model is painted with three colors minimum and based. Best painted army will be voted upon by the players and will be a separate award.
Games:
League participants are responsible for scheduling and organizing matches. Each match must be recorded on the player’s respective league score sheet. Overall stats will be recorded each week online and reflected to show standings as well as each phase’s army list for each participant. Games may be played with standard missions from the 40k rulebook, as well as the 40k Battle Missions book, Imperial Armour scenarios, or any other scenario as long as both participants agree upon the mission scenario. Any individual participant may play no more than 5 games per month. In addition, no more than two games may be played against the same opponent in a single month.
The narrative part is still under construction, as I am waiting to determine what all armies each participant will be using.

Since the narrative is under construction i guess you want comments on the league mechanics.
If these are completely new players 250 extra a month seems unreasonable unless you know them and they have enough disposable time and income to get that done. I would see if painted models could be lent by the lgs/other players that have fully apinted armies.
The painting/no proxy ect just seems like a lot for someone who is taking their first steps and might just want to roll dice and have fun while learning a new game as it were.
I understand that you want to get things proper and organized but it feels like you are trying to target 2 very diffent demographics with the same system.
The rewards seem good and like they are in the right spot (maybe 3 pots of paint instead of 2 though for best painted).
As for the scoring i would do wins and losses as opposed to how well you won/how badly you lost but that's a personal prefence i guess. I would say the scoring is balanced and where it needs to be.
That's right, this is an idea for my garage hammer group I suppose you could say. None of us have ever really played at TBS, unfortunately. Does anything like this ever go on there?
I'm working on narrative but it is somewhat dependent upon what armies are played. Several participants are still undecided.
Thanks for the points suggestions, I think I'll be scaling that back to the 150-200 range dependent upon what everyone seems okay with.

That's exactly what I'm trying to set up, I got 4 friends interested in 40k and to start it off I wanted to do small 500 point Armies (But you have to have 2 troops ... until this moment I had never heard of Escalation leagues/games/campaigns)
There aren't prizes though (Being as its 5 people, and we're all cash strapped as is, 4 of them have never done model gaming before)
But the Narrative is where I'm having a hard time, what are your idea's for that? I'd love to figure out a way to play a campaign, and build some story to this adventure we're all going on.... I'll be following this one closely hope to see how this turns out for you!
