Ok... i went to play a game last night and we had a big argument over the command squads Storm Shields

Now heres and example of one of my men..

Replaced chainsword with lighting claw
Replaced pistol with combi-melta

all good

now near the end it says that i may replace my pistol with Plasma pistol
(Not on this guy but)

Now at the end it says.
"Any Veteran may take the following.
Melta bombs
Storm Shield"


Now does that mean that i can take
Lighting claw
combi-melta
and a storm shield

What you say fits my understanding of the rules. It's worth noting that codexes were released years apart, and verbiage and rules decisions change over time. An older codex might prohibit this, even on similar units. I sopped collecting every codex after 3rd edition, so I don't know the specific wording of the other ones. I just try to keep track of what's legal for me to do.

My general response to when this comes up is "My codex says I can do it, your's will probably let you when you get a new one"
And when I sense something fishy: "My X works like Y, do you have an odd rule changing that, or is it just different?"

It's like when I was paying 20 points less for a rhino and getting free smoke and searchlights then a SoB player. Same tank, different editions of the rules/codexes.

Yup, totally legal.

The storm shields don't replace anything, you are just allowed to take them (for the extra points of course).

It's a comply legit loadout. The Storm Shield does not REPLACE anything, you are simply taking it as an additional piece of wargear. It's clear RAW. If someone says you cant do it just show them the codex and ask if they can read.

Not sure on vanilla marines, but for Dark Angels, banners do not replace anything.
If people are arguing with you about the storm shields, do what Crimthaan said. Simply ask them if they can read, and if the answer is yes, show them your codex. If the answer is no, maybe find other people to play with ?

If they say "No" just point to the next line, that says every time you make a save, they owe you a beer.

You can never replace a single weapon with a pair of lightening claws. At the very least not in the BA codex.
There are models that can swap two weapons out for a pair, then can take meltabombs or something else.

Watch out for the SS, as they rules state that do not get extra attacks for having 2 cc weapons. So pistol, power weapon, SS does not get the +1A.

The only codex that I can think is badly worded is the IG points section. It has its own internal logic though. Which is the point if someone hands you their codex you should be able to read it and spot most mistakes in people's lists, else they can point to the written rule which you are missing if you are mistaken.
