Looks like a lot of Deathstars are starting to make sure they have 2 characters for challanges. One because it is just a killer model that kills a lot of enemies. Then there is the other guy. He is usually as cheap as possible and is there just to take a challange that is to dangerous (Loki or MSS) or to stop some other One Wound Wonder from keeping your real killer out of combat.
For Tyranids it is usually a Prime with ScyTal and some configuration of bonesword.
What are the "other guys" in other armies and how are you equiping them?

Every character in the guard army at some point. The fact that I can take a completely unupgraded sarge and tie up the scariest guys in the game I find incredibly funny.
Just depends on how you load them. They can be setup to even kill the other guy if you feel like it. But most guard players just prefer to shoot the guy after he comes out of assault

That guard guy is why I need a Prime in with my Swarmlord.
Its why I started calling them One Wound Wonders because he could stop Swarmy from ripping an entire squad to shreads.

Some death stars are lucky enough for everyone in the unit to be the other guy. Paladins, Warlocks and Nobs are all characters, so they dont even need two ICs to do this.
As general guidelines for those who run non-char death stars, I would say the OG should be either cheap or sturdy. Preferably both.

I just use a tactical marine sergeant with a powersword.
He is usually good enough to have a chance at taking out the other guy in a challenge, while pedro kills stuff.

I haven't updated my army for 6th yet, but when I do I will probably go with TH/SS Sergeants. If given FNP, they are absurdly durable, and can threaten anything that gets IDed by S8 while also tying up MCs for a long time. (Due to the re-roll they get).

Based on the wording in the Characters section, and what was mentioned at one of the Games Days, I don't expect this to last through a FAQ. I forget the exact statement (and link), but the Games Day quote said something about not intending full Character squads. Under Character Types (p63), the exact line that I'm referring to is "They have their own profile, but do not have a separate entry". IE Warlock with guardians - character. Warlock retinue - not characters.
Of course this is countering the (c) listings in the Appendix that don't qualify anything, so it'll have to wait for a FAQ before being fully resolved.

I guess that will leave Chaos Terminators as the only ones then. For DE its going to be a Haemoculus. Brings a pain token to the party. Might put Mindphase guantlets on him if you think he might be challenging anyone with lower Init(power fists, necrons, nobz)

For DE any cheap sergeant/equivalent with a venom blade. Will usually always strike first with 2+ to wound. You should always force some saves and with a bit of luck knock a wound off to make it easier for your IC to finish the job after ripping through the rest of the squad.
