I think each hero goes into there own warband; this is important for deployment in some missions.
Otherwise, hero armies are always a bit underwhelming - it's the men/orcs/goblins/uruks/evil men that get the job done

Yes, heroes for the most part are just point sinks until you reach that critical amount of boots on the field. Then they do shine when they have the correct amount of back up, both ranged and in melee
