Why would you choose a jump pack or just a regular pack? What difference does it make, and why can't I just use a rhino to get around the table quickly?

I've never played 40k before, I'm a complete novice haha

The Rhino suffers from three notable problems versus using jump packs.

1) Units that disembark from a Rhino can't assault in their next assault phase. You have to drive up and get out, then next turn you can walk up and assault. Jump packs skip that intermediate step.

2) One lascannon kills one jump pack guy. The squad isn't slowed by his loss. One lascannon hit can killer or immobilize the Rhino, stalling the entire squad.

3) You can't contest within a Rhino.

A jump pack lets you get into advantageous positions; on top of buildings, over hills and difficult terrain, over enemy units and similar things. Also, you can jump 12" over something, then charge. You can only move 6" with a Rhino and disembark a further 6", and after that you can't charge. However, this is a tradeoff as you get survivability against small arms fire and a lot of units that can't use jump packs can still get in a Rhino.

Thanks

I don't know whether or not to make my Death Company with jump packs or not, or just stick them in a rhino

Jump packs are obscenely expensive for Death Company and Vanguard Vets. They're great on assault Marines though.

Death Company are best kept as a reserve assault unit that piles out of a vehicle, so either a Land Raider or a Stormraven.

The Jump Packs are too expensive.

Regular Assault Marines are best with Jump Packs, because they come with them standard.

I could be wrong, but with jump packs don't you get the Hammer of the Wrath or what ever that rule is called, or does everyone get it?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Only if the Jump Pack was not used in the movement phase.

It also gives you a reroll of the charge distance too.

So you can either move 12" and charge 2D6 with no Hammer of Wrath,

Or you can move 6" and charge 2D6 with a Reroll and Hammer of Wrath.
