Rough outline, just looking for a place to throw out my basic ideas and make sure I don't sound way off the mark.

So the whole premise is on some large campaign a few thousand years ago they had most of their companies deployed and through a series of crushing defeats they lost over half of the chapter's forces and their fortress world. The remaining companies got word and gathered to attempt to retake their home, but failed. Depleted and beaten they set up what was meant to be a temporary HQ. Thousands of years later the chapter exists still under strength and missing almost all of it's information about it's founding and what happened to the rest of the chapter. The above information is about all that is known to the remaining companies, with a few more details that are unconfirmable and only known through stories and myths.

As a result of the constant war and being undermanned the Screeching Specters have valuable few sets of armor, and fewer sets of Tactical Dreadnought Armor. With long conflicts and constant repair of the power armor over the thousands of years even their heraldry is left unknown to them. Their grey power armor is adorned only with the Aquila and shoulder guards trimmed in company colors. They do not know if grey was even their original color scheme, or one that has just developed over the pressure of attempting to repair old suits. Some of the veterans are adorned with differently colored helmets, helms that have been in the chapter for millennia indicating a possible previous color scheme, though as these helms are black, and occasionally yellow, it is unknown which would have been the color scheme and which would have been the veteran status helm.

Even with all their history lost, the Specters fight with a burning vengeance to one day reclaim their fortress world that was taken from them. While they have no heraldry or ancient heroes in records to be proud of, the warriors of the Specters fight twice as ferociously to retake their heritage. For something to be proud of.
