Where the sun crosses the field of blood.

So, I'm looking at the Nomad TAGs and ponders why they're priced as they are...
The Lizard can have (in addition to it's MULTI HMG) a Heavy Flamer for 88 points or a Heavy GL for 96 points.
For two points more than the Flamethrower version, the Szalamandra has +3 BTS and the Hyper-awesome magnetic cannon. To me this feels even better than the GL Lizard for 6 points less... why?
And then there's the Iguana. For 15 points less than the Flamethrower Lizard, and 17 points less than the Szalamandra, it comes with a MULTI HMG and a Heavy Flamethrower, one less wounds and two less in armor... but when it dies, it ejects a HMG-wielding HI... And as a bonus, it's also a repeater for your Hacker needs.

So... is it just me, or are the TAGs better the cheaper they become? I would prefer the Iguana over the other two any day, and the Szalamandra over the HGL Lizard. I don't even think I would ever pay for the HGL Lizard.
Or am I missing something that makes the expensiver TAGs worth it?

The reasons are the following, first of all the Iguana has a simple HMG, the two less points in armour are quite important because the woulds carry over to the HI and on more than one occasion the HI has been ejected in dead state.

The Multi HMG is a better defense option than the HRMC which is not as good in ARO as it is when used in the active turn and most importantly the heavy grenade launcher when used correctly (behind cover out of LOF in conjunction with FO) is a terror weapon.

The one main thing the Iguana has over the others, is that when the TAG is toast, if the operator is still alive, you keep HIS order (the pilots DO NOT generate orders, the OPERATOR does).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

The HGL Lizard is a beast. The thing is basically a piece of close-support artillery that still has an awesome direct-fire weapon as well.

The HGL is lobbing shots out to 32" with pretty good accuracy and can lob as far as 96" away. Combine that with speculative fire and it can be bombarding the enemy deployment zone early and often.

You will quickly find speculative fire is the bane of things like link teams.

Meanwhile the HFL Lizard is a bit cheaper than the Szalamandra and its MULTI HMG is a better ARO weapon and despite getting one less shot I still rank it a bit higher because it can utilize explosive ammo for hard targets. It just feels more flexible than the HRMC which is basically around to kill other TAGs and little more.

The Szalamandra is a specialized tool. It is an expensive direct-fire platform and assault unit that specializes in taking out enemy TAGs by spitting out so much fire that it overwhelms them. It can also do nasty things to infantry in general. But it is less of a swiss army knife than the Lizard, especially the HGL Lizard who deals with both direct and indirect fire well.

Overall the Lizard and Szallie are both close contenders.

The Iguana is a whole different kettle of fish. It is basically a faster and better-armoured heavy infantry unit. It has only 6 ARM and 2 STR so it will lose its TAG benefits sooner. And what's more it only comes with a regular HMG instead of a MULTI HMG making it more lightly armed. But it is cheap and effective and harder to kill entirely due to the ejecting HI unit.

Nomads have a flexible array of TAGs at their disposal and I don't think any of them are quite better than any other. Like any other unit in Infinity you just have to fit the right plan to them and they will shine.

I have only used the Iguana (I proxied a WH40k IG sentinel) and found it to be excellent. The poster above me is spot on - it's not so much a TAG as a really fast heavy infantry, which is great! You can throw it forward in the active turn and it will do some damage - if your operator ejects, you have the choice whether to make a suicidal attack or try and hide him for the order/retreat threshold.

Another nice thing is that the iguana has repeater, so against other TAGs or really elite HI, you could try and get it close outside LoF, and use a hacker to imobilise. 6-4 MOV makes this easier than most repeater carriers and an Iguana is less fragile than remotes.

Overall, I liked the Iguana because it can achieve the main offensive purpose of a TAG (running about machine gunning models) without paying the price of a heavy TAG. After all, winning a FtF roll is not that hard, a BS14 HMG should be sufficient. Against super hard targets, use the points saved and have a specialist model do the job!
