I would say that the BOTBG would cease to work as it is a demonic gift of Khorne.
Meaning after you use DE the collor would be turned off and the bloodthirister would only have his 4+ invulnerable save against your force weapons and other psychic powers who can wound him.

I would imagine he has a 2+ Save against the effects of it. If he fails, it is gone for the duration of the Excommunicate and would have no protection against subsequent attacks.

That save only works against psychic powers that wound, which Dark Excommunication doesn't do. So you only get the 6+ Deny the Witch save against it.

I forgot to ask how do challenges affect casting DE versus the greater daemon? I'm thinking the first round it will go off barring a failed roll to cast or the Bloodthirster successfully denies the witch.
What if the character casting DE is not the one to accept the challenge in the first round of melee? How about continuing rounds of melee - can the psyker still vast DE even it's not the one fighting the Bloodthirster?

Dark Excommunication only affects models from units that are in base contact with the caster.
So if you have a single model unit like a Bloodthirster in a challenge, only the model in the challenge with the Bloodthirster can cast Dark Excommunication on it, as they're only considered to be in base contact with each other.
If you have a multi model unit with a character in it, and that character is in a challenge, then any model that can cast Dark Excommunication on either the character or the rest of the unit will affect the entire unit.

Both happen at the start of the fight subp[hase, from memory. Meaning person who charges chooses the order.
