Subject: a few questions regarding nova psyker attacks?

the power in question is: telekinesis power 4: Shockwave page 422
12" str 3 ap- assault d6 NOVA
question 1: Ok assuming im like 10" away and my powere hits half of the unit... to make it easy we will say his 2 out of 5 targets... are the 3 not hit (even though same unit) immune to the effects?
2: How many hits does this power have... clarification... If I hit a squad of.... say 30 orks... is that 30xd6 or does the unit simply suffer ONLY d6 hits.
NOVA rule:A nova power auto hits and targets all enemy units within its range, regardless of LOS locked in combat, intervening models cover and so on. Otherwise Nova is treated like a shooting attack and indeed will have a profile as a shooting attack
it seems OP if its 30xd6 but it seems.. weak as why would it be NOVA short range and only d6 hits.... Dont get me wrong... i would love to see me roll a d6 against a HUGE squad and wrack up 180 hits, but it just deosnt seem fair... but as it being a NOVA I assume every model hit suffers d6 hits?

1. Since its a psychic shooting attack it follows the rules for normal shooting in regards to wound allocation etc.
2. Its only D6 per unit not D6 per model in the unit.

ok well that is a 100% useless power as a nid player then as even the primaris power of that list has more use, since i run nids ill just steer clear of that power list choice even for my bigger psychic bugs like Swarmlord ...
just odd that GW messes up a word like NOVA... in general (games) where "nova" is used its an explosion that hits everything in range... so i figured it hits everything in range... d6 times... lol silly. Thanks for the help.

It does hit every "Unit" in range. So with positioning you can hit several units. In the middle turns of the game when all the armies come together, a 12" radius is huge. Just compare to your regular synapse range.

It's actually a quite useful power as it hits ALL enemy units within range. So you could have more than one enemy unit get hit by one attack. It's only strength 3, but still can be pretty nasty.

Or if you run like 4-5 big bugs with this spell and if set up nicely so that they overlap and hit mostly the same units it can be pretty effective especially against MSU.

I'm going to past a reply I posted in another forum about nova powers. It really blows my mind that people are complaining about a power that doesn't need to hit, have LoS, ignores cover and can hit people in combat, even though they're already overplaying it. Here goes:
"So Nova powers can target all units in the area of effect, but they don't allow you to fire the weapon multiple times. Witchfire powers are resolved like shooting attacks, and when firing a weapon you only resolve its profile a single time.
This means that with cleansing flames (warp focus 2) will roll 2d6 hits. This is in line with every other 2 focus powers. Nova's are unique in that you don't target a specific unit, they don't need to roll to hit or even have LoS, and can hit someone in combat. So when the power goes off you roll 2d6. Roll to wound against the closest enemy target to the focal point of the power. If he dies then you move on to the next closest model, even if that model is in a different unit from the first.
People try to scam their way into having Nova's inflict 2d6 on EACH unit in range. This is wrong, as you can only fire your 2d6 hut Nova gun once per turn. And no other powers can cause 50 or more hits, especially not a force 2 power. And especially not a force 2 power that automatically hits, can hit people in combat, ignores cover saves, can damage multiple units, and doesn't need line of sight. That just doesn't fit in the power level of other powers if you try to get more than a possible 12 hits from a single power."
--------------------------------
You only fire the nova power profile once per manifestation, not once per unit. That one generation of the power has the unique ability to hit multiple units like a blase weapon or template, only without a blast or template. That's why it's not every model in a 9" area around the psyker that are affected.

...and were still wrong. You stated they are resolved like shooting attacks - at no point will a shooting attack 'jump' to another unit.
You also said you only fire the weapon once. This is true. It just targets all the units, as you also stated. All the wounds caused will happen at the same time.

Added to which, Novas have no special exceptions to the normal wound allocation rules that would let them ignore LOS.
Regardless, though, this thread was for 6th edition. Moving on.
