I played against some White Scars with Gray Knight allies this weekend, and we were discussing Mindstrike Missiles annihilating Gray Knights. I was informed that it only effects models who are designated 'Psyker' in their profile, even though every unit I know of (in my limited knowledge of their codex) can cast psychic powers. So, does the ability to cast psychic powers make a model a psyker, or does it have to be labeled such?

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

If a Mindstrike missile hits a Grey Knights squad with the Brotherhood of Psykers rule, the unit suffers a single Perils of the Warp, resolved against the Justicar/Knight of the Flame or a random squad member if none is in the unit. In addition to the S4 Blast of course.

So yeah, it'll do some extra damage, but I wouldn't say 'annihilating'. GK have much more to fear from other GK than a couple of Mindstrike missiles. Psykout grenades combined with power weapons being the main offender.

In most cases, the model must have the special rule "Psyker" to be affected by such weapons/abilities.

GK units are special in that many of them 'count' as a single psyker for the purposes of tests/perils/etc. even though they may not have the special rule individually.

However, almost all (if not all) of the SCs and various HQs have the individual special rule of 'psyker' even when attached to another unit.

See if you can borrow a friend's GK codex, they spell it out quite well (although not perfectly).

If for whatever reason you can't get hold of a Codex, it broadly works like this:

Grey Knights IC: standard psyker.
Grey Knights unit: entire unit counts as a single psyker, as Redemption described.
Grey Knights vehicle: is a psyker with a Ld of 10, though is Fearless and still can't be wounded etc. as per all vehicles.
Non-Grey Knights unit (ie Death Cult Assassins, Jokaero) - not psykers.

There are one or two exceptions - for instance, Inquisitors can be made psykers as well - but if you stick to noting whether the unit is actually made up of Grey Knights or not, you can't go too far wrong.

Except, they do have Brotherhood of Psykers.

And that is somewhat wrong too, as this is only if they are still alive. Otherwise it's just one of the rank and file that counts as the psyker.

That's still not entirely correct, as the entire squad counts as a single Psyker. So anti-psyker wargear like a Mindstrike missiles doesn't have hit the Justicar/Keeper of the Flame for it's Psishock rule to trigger, as long as the Blast marker is over any GK member of the squad.

Yeah, Redemption has it, wish I'd pointed that out earlier. The entire unit counts as the psyker - not just the Justicar/KOTF - it's just that any individual effects such as Perils are resolved against them first.

So wait, if a squad of Paladins get Midstike missiled only ONE hit will be resolved against them regardless of how many models are hit by the template because only ONE of them counts a Psyker (One random model in the unit takes the hit since the dont have a guy leading them)?

A Mindstrike will only trigger one Psi-shock effect on a paladin unit that it hits, regardless of how many models are under the blast marker. It will still inflict one S4 AP5 hit per model under the blast.

Hmmm well now I feel bad. We played it each one of them took a Perils hit. My appologies to my opponent 6 months ago! C'mon Karma!
