So, this is kinda a question about rules and the philosophical aspect of the Gud Doktor's Medpack Rule. Since we can now pre-measure and have 2D6 assault ranges, the clause that the Grotsnik MUST assault if possible is now convoluted in a different way. It could be read as he must assault only if he is guaranteed to make the assault roll, or 2" away from the enemy unit (which I doubt). The other way to read it is if it is possible for him to assault, then he must attempt it, even if the enemy unit is barely within 12". He is crazy, after all. This would extend to him in assault vehicles at the beginning of the Movement Phase, to measure the 6" movement, his 6" disembark, and the 12" assault range to determine if the vehicle goes faster than Combat Speed. Does anybody have an opinion on this?

If he is within 12"and it is legal for him to do so (ie didn't run in the previous shooting phase) he is obligated to declare a charge.

At least that's how I read it.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I wouldn't think he would be allowed to Run if he was 12" away from the enemy unit at the beginning of the Shooting Phase in the first place?

I think what happy jew mean is that if you ran when 18" away and then moved to 12" away he does not declare a charge as he is not allowed to by the rules, but if he is able to change any distance up to 12" he must declare a charge no matter if 12" or 2" away, pretty much like fury in WHFB as I read it..

If running would prevent him from being able to assault the nearest unit then no he would not be able to perform that action.

Debatable, however, if for example he was 20" away, he moves 6" and then runs 6". He is within possible assault range but since he ran he would not be able to assault.

There was never a mandatory obligation to run in the previous FAQ for Mad Dok. You were allowed to try and shoot. Why would this change now?

Running is done in the shooting phase. His rule only applies during the movement phase.

However, I would concede that if a unit was withing 12", he would not be allowed to run as that would prevent him from assaulting.

"If possible" is quite clear - it is POSSIBLE to charge when 12" away, so you must declare a charge.

Possible does not require certainty, by definition

Yes, but if you run in the shooting phase before it, you are not allowed to assault. This means you could intentionally run Mad Dok in order to keep him from assaulting.

I think Mad Dok is one of those characters where you really need to take RAW and apply the "spirit of the rule" to him. The intent of the rule is quite clear. Point his squad at the closest unit and do everything you can to kill it. Once dead, rinse and repeat.
