Metal would be better on the level 2, and black guard are capped at 20.

You are way over on core points. You only need 625, and you should be as close to that as possible.

Drop some crossbows or the spearmen and take 5 harpies, and the rest of the points spend on more Special units. 20 Shades in 2 units of 10 is always fun.

I don't really get this 'minimum-core' thing. I mean, sure it works for armies like High Elves, because their Special Choices are just far superior. In my opinion, DE have some of the best core unts available. Crossbowmen are simply sublime, shredding almost anything that is unfortunate to get in their way (with a little hep from Shadow Magic). Then I've taken a Corsair Horde because it kicks ass and finally a unit of Spearmen because it's good to have a nice solid block of core.

Harpies aren't great I find, and shades do their job better. True, I could take some more but I think I may have enough.

They're still very good, there was just no space for them in my list really.

Shades may do the job better - arguably, because harpies don't cause panic and shades do - but harpies definitely do it cheaper.

But Shades also have the ability to deploy in crossbow short range of an intended target straight away. Harpies can't do that.

Shades have to deploy at least 12" away, and as you round up it is 13".

Didn't scouts used to be able to deploy anywhere if they were out of LoS, and at least 8" away if they were in LoS?

You can deploy right on the 12" line, which makes you 12" away and at short range - or, more importantly, in Rending Star range.

7E rules. This allowed the Assassin trick, where the assassin would reveal on the top of 1, displacing a shade into LOS and allowing the unit to charge on turn 1.

In 8E, you can deploy in plain sight of an enemy unit... just not inside of 12"

Interesting interpretations there. Either way, I much prefer Shades anyway
