as the title says i think i'm going to start up 40k again because i miss having all the little dudes around my house. i just have some questions:
1. i used to store all my warhammer stuff in a shoebox i lined with bubblewrap. however the shoebox is running out of space. where do you guys all store your stuff? i dont want to drop like a hundred bucks on s giant special case but i do acknowledge that i need a place to store all my little soldiers
2. what army should i start painting? I mostly paint... i very rarely play. i have the AoBR units and a CSM battleforce, but to be honest I don't really like CSM too much. They look alright but they weren't that fun to paint (besides the possessed CSM which i went crazy on) but maybe thats really more my fault than anything else. should i continue to paint CSM since i have a lot of them already or should i start a new army? as i said before i next to never play (i think i played maybe once) and although i would be interested in playing i'm not going to drive like an hour to play warhammer with strangers, you know? so basically do i start an army of guys that are fun to paint or should i always try and build a competitive army?
3. if i were to stat warhammer again could i just paint a unit however i want and that would be the unit i was going for? heres an example of what i mean: let's say i have AoBR and i paint the marines red... if i played in a game store would people consider those to be blood angels (like i'd want them to be) or would i have to specifically buy blood angel models? basically how strict are people on what units "count" and what don't?
thanks for any advice! i'm excited to start spending all my hard earned money on plastic soldiers again

1. I have a large Ikea shelf that's 10' long and 6' tall that I put all of my terrain, models, and other stuff on. I also have 3 book cases that cover about the same area that contain a few gaming books.
2. Paint what you're likely to play. It feels good to run a painted army. If you really aren't going to play, then I'd go Chaos simply because the models are more interesting.
3. The AoBR models can be used in Blood Angels, Black Templars, Space Wolves, Ultramarines, and every other army in between. I have several in my Black Templar army. Further, I've used my Black Templar painted space marines as Codex Space Marines a few times. As long as the weapons are WYSIWYG, you're golden.
4. The new starter set is due next month. In it will be Dark Angels and Chaos Marines. There will also be the new MINI-rule book, just like the AoBR one you're familiar with. I'm pointing this out in case you were about to buy the new rule book for 6th Edition.
Welcome back!

I've got nothing and am looking forward to what people say about #1
#2 I'd say if you don't really like playing so much I'd get either 1 a nice host of daemons because they're pretty awesome to paint and 2 something big. Like a titan or one of the FW daemons. Those things are fantastic and if you're a really good painter they're definitly display oriented. It kinda sucks cuz most of the little guys aren't that great for display but if you buy a huge one to set them off of it really pulls people in and then they can go deeper into looking at the littler guys if they want.
#3 is more of a ehh... most people in casual wont really care if you play a counts as army. You don't really play so I wouldn't worry so much about that aspect. I mean the only people that will really care are people you're beating at the game side of things since they're getting beaten. If you just have some mates over and they see your 40k stuff and ask what it is you probably wont say it's a blood angels group anyway you'll say they're space marines that use alot of close combat weopens and prefur to revel in their enemies blood...When just one of their eyebrows starts to raise you'll shrug and say hey they're still painted pretty sweet right.
Edit: forgot the most important part! Welcome back and I hope you enjoy your mini men as much as I do.

If you enjoy painting and modeling and decide not to field a space marine army at all you could get an Ork army, there is a lot of interesting modeling and painting opportunities in that army.
The marine models for most things are the exact same models just painted differently. So it really just matters how you have them painted and what rules you say you are using.
If you do decide you like CSM they should be getting a new codex soon and your Orks from the AOBR box could be brought in as allies in 6th.

waaaaait so i can field Orks and CSM at the same time? because that would be amazing, I love painting Orks.
Also anyone know when this new starter kit comes out? If it's the same price as AoBR then I will have stuff to paint for months and a new rules book to nerd out over

September is the rumor. Go check out the rather lengthy thread in the News and Rumor section for more details. Also, do a search in this forum and the tactics forum for Allies to learn more about them.

For cases I recommend checking your local hardware store, they will typically have some metal cases for about $25 and they already have foam inserts. They are meant for tools, but work just as well for models.

I just wanted to say again some of those bigger models with keep you busy for months and really give you a set piece unit to build the rest of your army around. Again just my two cents but I've seen those FW daemons in armies and every piece seems to gravitate around them, incorperating elements of the larger piece yet still seemingly part of the greater whole of the army... LR can also be that center piece for smaller armies.
I just feel like without a grounded theme I generally tend to wander and in the end my army is widely colored and plain garish to look at. That central piece tends to reign me in while giving me the freedom to make subtle diffrences to individual units, again my 2 cents

I still haven't gotten back into actually playing, but I spent 20 years basically just being Orks because that's what I had. Not that I don't Love orks, I love them, I love the look of them, and I love modeling them, but I realized that as long as I'm buying and not playing (just like you) I might as well buy what looks neat. Next thing I knew it I had a 1000pt Necron Army. I'd say that now is the time to look for what really sings to you and look like fun to paint. Pick two armies and dabble,
With the 6th ed. the walls have come down as you can combine two armies now (unless you've got a think for Tyranid, but if you didn't like painting Chaos I'm going to guess Tyranid isn't your thing) so you can have the best of both worlds and have a good chance of playing.
As far as storage I bought this bundle ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007N5ZULO/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00) and use bits of foam and bubble wrap to keep my mdels from moving around too much. I also have a few foam trays from the local game store, but they do add up pretty quickly.

For storage, I used Tupperware for my dudesmen until I started fantasy also and caved in to buying foam for my infantry. If you don't want foam, something I can suggest is to use a land raider or battleforce sized box, with the idea pretty much the same as the shoebox-For infantry, be aware that metal will probably chip paint-mine does and it's got foam. Also be aware that your stuff will slide around alot, and flimsier stuff (like tomb kings) will break, even the bigger and more "solid" models. My LRC box currently has my 2 LRCs, my dreadnought, and my rhino-though the multimeltas have a rough time.
Edit: Also, my point of view is from a Marine player's so the models are kind of blocky and more durable then the foul xenos.
@Kronk, love the custom rank, but it's a shame that I have to crusade you for being a filthy psyker that snuck into our chapter
