Hey, first off i am very sorry if this is in the wrong section or has been covered, i couldn't find anything along these lines in the search engine.

My question is, when playing an official game/tournament, are there set rules on the points limit, i.e. would a 1501 pt army be disallowed?

You can do whatever you like, man! Tastey Taste runs 1503 tournaments up here all the time, haha.

But, typically 1500, 1750, 1850 and 2000 are the most common.

If you were playing a 1500 pt match, yea 1501 would be illegal. You must atay with in the bounds of your points.

As above. At a formal event, normally the point limit is a hard limit. No going over even by 1pt.

I've heard of people running events at funny totals, though. Like 1776 for an American 4th of July event. Or one time I attended a tournament where the total was 1966, because that's the year the manager was born in, and the tournament fell on his birthday.

But 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 1850, and 2000 seem to be the most common tournament game sizes, with more falling in the mid to upper range of that.
