Hello there,

I enjoy browsing the forum but I took the plunge and decided to participate more. Here is my latest platoon, German paratroopers in the Ardennes. I hope you will like them:

wow awesome love the camo love it with the blueish color of the luftwaffe

We are winged salvation, but we are a terrible, final salvation, and our wings embrace the horizon with fire. We are the Blood Angels. To confront us is to die, and death is my remit, my reality, my unbounded domain. I have known death, and defeated it, claimed it as my own. To my cost, to my strength, death is my one gift to bestow, and I am nothing if not generous.

I think your painting is oustanding!

Where did you come up with the colour choice of the helmets?

Too see an entire platoon with crisp clean apple green helmets is odd.

Normandie camo would be more in line with an ardennes FJ list.

Im no expert though so maybe someone else who is a purist could throw in their 2 cents out of personal interest to me =]

But the painting is still wonderful and I would love to field this platoon they make my FJ look stupid =[

Those are some great paint jobs! The camo on the figures looks very well done.

Did someone call the resident anal rivet counter?

The M36 Jump Helmet only came in plain grey,... But it was replaced by the M37 and the slightly improved M38 jump helmets.

Contary to popular belief there was no Luftwaffe designated colour for their helmets and they seemed to have followed Heer regs to a degree. That said there is some clear definition to the colours and the periods in which they were employed. Though these would of course crossover...

Firstly you find Apple Green and Light Field Grey (similar to Heer regulations), this is then followed by slate grey, dark field grey and then textured field grey, as per the Heer field regulations.

So roughly...

1) Initially double decal, smooth RAL 7009 "Apple Green"/"Light Field Grey".
2) From 27/1/40 should have been double decal, smooth slate grey, but probably rare.
3) From 21/3/40 should have been repainted with textured RAL 6006 "Dark Field Grey" with single decal.
4) From 28/8/43 Heer decal removed.

Of course that is the regs... and not all followed that. You also have localised camo painting using sand and green.

It would be unusual to find many Apple Green in the late-war period, but it does look good.

So for me, its a winner on 'Kewl-Factor'.

Thanks. I knew most of that which is why seeing so many apple green helmets struck me as odd in the first place.

I wouldn't call myself anal more of a purist? =]

I too run a FJ army based on Eastern Front and have a very tough time finding good info on kit etc... what they were issued vs what they actually used are vastly different.

Like I said though the painting was and is fantastic.

Very nicely done!

Big P, thanks for knowing the details and also knowing that they weren't likely to have all those helmets that color in LW, but not letting that get in the way of the cool factor.

I love discussing the details of the various aspects of the war, but it really bugs me when people use it as an excuse to insult my mini painting choices. As long as you know the list your opponent is using and can tell what the units are, does it really matter? I really even don't care if someone shows up with pink painted Tigers. I only have to look at the ugly things for a single game. They have to look at them every game.

You better do not mention red painted tanks here, since that may start a second thread on that topic

I guess the pink color would be better represented on the elefants anyway.

Of course post war the British SAS painted their desert vehicles a deep pink color. They were hard on the eyes, but it apparently provided exceptional visual camo in the desert.

Hello,

sorry for the delay, I was off on vacations. Thanks a lot for the comments, I really wasn't sure about the bases until I started to get positive feedback :-)

The topic of the helmet is a good one. My understanding so far is that very late war FJ would have 3 colors painted helmets, helmet covers in splinter pattern, helmet covered with chicken wired.

The figures from FIB do not have any helmet cover and come with very plain helmets. I cut a bit corners and decided that my figures would do without for the sake of too much done already on them and it should come as an obsession. Then I was left with the choice of a helmet color. I did think it over and eventually went for a standard plain green one. The reason is purely for aesthetics. I do not know whether my doubts are founded but I suspect that camouflaged helmets will indeed break the shapes of the helmets (as intented in real life) and that in the end my figures would not be nicely defined but "too much" camouflaged.

So that's the story behind the helmets :-)

I hope you like them anyway. Thanks for the comments, I will be posting more as more painted figured are done (next in line pz grn engineers and maybe a couple of Tiger II if I am inspired)
