Always been a free game.
I've played it a fair bit.

I tried it, and really wasn't impressed at all.
The controls are clunky even once you gain access to keymapping, and the game's combat system was not impressive. MAybe it gets better at higher levels, but that'd require me to put effort in to a boring game in order to get to the good part, which I'm really not wanting to do.

And that's the main issue it has. Well besides its stability issues, not sure if going to steam fixes that or not.
It's also a lot less grindy than it used to be, but the main content seems to favour mid level instead of end game. They've started to add some stuff in. I remember at one point the content basically ended at 90, then didn't bother to pick back up again until level 120; which then wasn't worth it.
I have no idea how people got through those next 80 levels, which still have zero additional content and reached level 200.

For the longest while I couldn't even find a quest for level one... the quest system leaves a LOT to be desired.

A lot of the game leaves a lot to be desired sadly.
I can more or less summarise the entire game thusly;
Black Mage guy wants to destroy world, you are hero guy that can save world. Grind, get aoe skill, grind some more. Quests sprinkled in for flavoured grinding.
All that changed was the towns got closer together so walking didn't take so long and they reduced the numbers on some of the quests. You can still find the old ones in some places like kill 333 of this mushroom, 333 of this similar one and then finally 333 of this last type. You get a little badge with crappy stats.

If you want something sort of similar, try Wanderlust. Its not free, but it is cheap and reasonably fun with decent 16-bit style graphics.
