Ok, so i'm completely new to painting Warhammer 40K kits (having only painted 1 combat squad of Space Marines and 1 Mk V Ironclad Dreadnought so far) and i'm obsessed with Salamanders marines but after seeing a picture of the primarch Corax with a winged jump pack I wanted to have a go at making a Salamanders-ish jump pack with drake style wings in place of raven wings. I'm thinking of using a Forge World Mk V Heresy Era jump pack - but I've got no real clue how to achieve the wings on it.

Any suggestions or directions to suitable wings would be much appreciated.

Would bat wings be drake-like enough? i suspect that's your most likely source, unless one of the third party resin manufacturers already does something appropriate in a jump pack.

I'm presuming you want something symbolicly wing-like rather than a 'real' wing - a dragon equivalent of the feathered Sanguinary Guard jump pack?

There are the plastic bat-winged chaos marine back packs (from the Possessed kit?), but they probably look too Chaotic for your purpose.

Not sure if GW currently do any small bat-like wings in plastic, other than Tyranid Gargoyles which might be too big. I have a dozen small bats from a GW Dungeon Creatures kit, which might be suitable, but that's long OOP.

Just a thought, but why not try to green stuff a dragon head around the main and sub thrusters of this jump pack from forge world (the mk4 assault squad kit), it'd look like the dragon were breathing fire every time they took off!

(You could do the same with any of the assault kits for that matter - sorry, I replied in haste without checking which pack you wanted to use!)

Good point re dragon heads - they (or at least reptilian heads) are more easily available than wings. Even if they don't suit your jump pack dude, they may be useful elsewhere in your army.

I had thought of using the current plastic Daemon Prince wings as they are the closest GW comes to producing the desired effect, however the muscles and the joints make them look far to chaotic - like he's got mutated wings sprouting out of the jump pack. I also kind of wanted to avoid bat-like wings as they tend towards looking to Night Lords like. I'd also thought of getting the Sanguinary Guard pack and cutting out the feathers to replace with scales but that may be a bad idea.

Great idea - I had thought of something similar around the top of the main thrusters, but Mk V haven't got the sub thrusters (I hadn't noticed them at least), my only problem would be that they would be too distorted by stretching the drakes mouth around the thruster - but definately a possibility. Thanks reinforcing that idea though. I'm wondering if a Warhammer lizard-man head would fit around it... or would that just look stupid? (not having much experience of Lizardmen!)

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into all of them (especially the green-stuff orientated ones ). If theres anymore ideas please feel free to tell me. Thanks again.

I spent some time looking for wings for my own jump packs, didn't like the sanguinary guard ones but still wanted feathered wings. Nabbed some Dark Eldar Scourges wings, they have more "bat-like" ones too that you might be able to cut down so that they don't look so batlike. Beyond that, if chaos wings look too chaosy and dark eldar wings too dark eldary... not to mention tyranid wings looking too tyranidy... I figure your best option would be to go for another company.

Maybe these would work?

or perhaps these?

Guess it really depends what kind of feel you're going after, small dragonlike wings are hard to find, especially if you don't want them to be batlike, which they likely will be at smaller sizes.
I'd suggest a few different tries at google images for inspiration, alternatively going through all different GW ranges to find anything that might work. Warhammer Fantasy has some Dark Elf harpy wings that might work.

Found this from armorcast. These head pieces might look good on the sides of a sing thruster jump pack to replace the side thruster blitz. http://armorcast.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=1445&osCsid=229ca88b8a60cb3d114750b5bed59803

@Johnno - I've pretty much been through all the GW or Forge World options and none of them are quite what i'm looking for, which is no suprise considering they're intended for chaos or for specific models. However, I do appreciate you taking the time to find those images you posted. I particularly liked the upper left hand set of wings in the reapermini set, depending upon size I may go for those with the addition of some greenstuff sculpted on.

@Effendi - The pieces you indicated may not really go with the particular jump pack i was intending on using - but I may yet use them in another context (possibly around the mouth of a flamer or a melta) so thanks anyway.

Thanks all, your help is much appreciated.
