Looking for something historical. Looking for a game where I can play at the army commander level in ancient battles - or up to the American Civil War. This would be on a laptop and occasional only. For example, playing the role of Darius at Issus or Grant at Shiloh, that sort of thing, not commander for an entire country. Not really interested in online play as this would be an occasional thing only.

Anyone have suggestions on a moderately priced game?

Rome: Total War? Slightly old but highly rated, unless I'm mistaken.

Robert E. Lee: Civil War General 1 or 2

Take control tactically on a hexagon tile map of the units present during some of the most pivotal battles of the Civil War.

The game is a bit outdated circa the late 1990's, but there has been no game since then that has done as well of a job in making a game about the American Civil War.

Age Of Empires 1 or 2? AOE 2 was a better game but AOE 1 was ancient times. Dead cheap these days.

I would go with something made by Slitherine Strategies. Probably look at History - Great Battles Medieval.

For real-time there is Rise of Nations, and a good turn-based game would be Civilizations 4.

Its old, but Sid Meiers' Gettysburg is great for occasional playing. Once you play out the Gettysburg campaign for both sides, the random battle generator is top notch. Highly recommended.

I will second both of these. Rise of Nations is best for 1 or 2 hour games with friends, civilation 4 is like crack.

Yeah, any of the older Total War games should run on most any computer. They aren't especially challenging, but that's a plus if frequent play isn't an option.

I can just throw another hat in the ring for Rome: Total War. As it would happen, I've got an unused set of the Rome: Total War Gold Edition disks that i'd like to unload... The original game, and the Barbarian expansion.

Empire Total War for Revolutionary War stuff. I find the Total War games very tactically satisfying.

I second the Total War series.

Start with Rome: Total War (should run on anything now), follow it up with Medieval 2: Total War (best one imo, only $15 on steam for OG + xpac, should run on almost anything), and then Empire Total War (will need a mediocre computer for this one).
