Game One
I finally found some players. In Kandahar, there were some soldiers and DoD who play in a local Magic the Gathering Tournament. I got in on it with some online cards I got and played it through about three times. Found some 40k players in the mix, and some who wanted to try it out. Today I finally had a match with a new guy who played it a couple times with his cousin. The game was with the bases I had (not even models). I had 10 bases in lava, and 10 in bases in sheet rock, plus 10 build terminators, two spawns, and 18 Daemottes. We played out the following game:
Me
HQ- Chaos Lord, Terminator Armor, Personal Icon, Combi Melta
Troops - 9 Bezerkers + 1 Champ with PF and Icon
Elite 1 - 3 Terminators with Combi Melta, Power Swords
Elite 2 - 3 Terminators with Power Claws
Him
HQ - Chaos Lord, Mark of Kharn, Daemon Weapon Sword
Troop - 8 Thousand Sons + 1 Sorcerer with Gift of Chaos
Elite - 6 Chosen with 5 Plasma Guns
Set Up
Tutorial Mission, just kill for 6 turns.
3' x 3' table with a six inch deployment zone, Dawn of War
2 impassable terrains (Rule book and cookie tin)
2 ruins, one in his deployment area one in mine (dominoes can , and cigarettes box)
3 domino walls
He made these walls bottle neck into a 3 inch gap that was visible for both his units. I knew why he did it and assumed it would make things more challenging. While my terrain was more or less convenient. The dead pile and rule book, I mean come on. Like I am even going to use terrain.
Deployment:
I had my 10 bezerkers at 6 inches to center, and all three units in terminator armor in reserve. He had his chosen in ruins, his 9 thousand sons center, and his Lord between both.
Turn 1: US
I move fist, running behind walls out of line of site from everyone. He moves his guys to better cover his bottle neck.
Turn 2: ME
I deep strike my terminator lord at about 14 inches from the Thousand Sons behind the wall from the Chosen. Move to another walled off point. Fire my Melta killing one Thousand son. Shooting my 10 Bolt Pistols and killing nothing. Bezerkers declare their assault and take one wound from Thousand sons. BIG mistake here, I role for my charge, being about 5.5 inches away, I role a four...... I try to find a rule that says I HAVE to move them or don't. I choose to move them thinking "Dont Hold Back" rule.
Turn 2: HIM
Sure enough his turns starts with my Bezerkers at the opening of his bottle neck cross fired to all of his firing sectors. He misses his cast, shoots with everything, and throws a Krag grenade without scatter. I loos all but Zerks except for the champ. He then Shoots and Assaults my HQ with his. His Daemon weapon back fires and he takes a wound.
Turn 3: Me
Our HQs are locked in combat and I have one Bezerker in play. I deep strike both Terminators, one at the edge of the ruins the other within about 2.5 inches of the Thousand Sons. My Bezerker charges and dies with over watch shots. My Terminator Melta 3 shots at the Chosen, but they only hit one. HQs fight some more and sure enough I land one more wound.
Turn 3: HIM
His Chosen fire 5 plasma and kill all three terminators. His Thousands Sons run away and fire to kill one Power Claw terminator. His HQ takes his Daemon weapon to the face as it backfires and kills him.
Turn 4: ME
I take my terminators with claws, and charge into the Chosen killing two. My HQ shoots and charges into the Thousand Sons. My challenge was denies as his Sorcerer was scared of me. So I killed one Troop.
Turn 5: HIM
His Gift of Chaos hits 6s... my HQ was insta-killed. We had the spawn models ready, but since They were in combat with the HQ, he chose not to fight the Spawn. He runs them out about 18 inches from my last two terminators. The assault between Chosen and PC Terminators continues. I suffer zero losses he suffers one.
Turn 6: ME
My two terminator fights to their very death. The assault ends with two dead chosen and two dead terminators. His six Thousand Sons and Sorcerer live.
He wins
Recap, I know I should have allowed more room at the bottle neck for better fire coverage. Knowing how I set up his list, I shouldn't have given him ruins mid field to infiltrate to. I had it measured in my head, and falling short on the charge by an inch and a half really killed me. I feel the Bezerkers are very nurfed now as you can not guarantee an assault even at 5 inches. My Bezerkers never had an assault, never had a chance to kill anything.
Thanks,
What do you all think?

Most people are not deployed to a FOB or thing like that. Some of the big bases are like state side affairs. Of course if you were very desperate or bored at a FOB, I've seen people play with rocks and dice along with grass and twigs (myself included lol)
Incidentially, I've played against myself plenty of times with green army men, cardboard boxes, toothpicks, and foam cups. Bases would be a huge bonus. Terrain with water bottles/books/boots/bags/pouches. Dice + tapemeasure + imagination is all you need!

Trust me I know how it is...its just when I was there in 09, we were living in tents, on missions every day and rockets and mortars were basically our alarm clock...I just cant fathom what it is like to be able to have that kind of environment....wow..well keep your head down anyway

Yeah, I am an FSR so I have traveled to 35 or so FOBs, COPs, and other sites. Time is really never an issue. Most soldiers like to get on cam or watch movies with their spare time (always the gym too but that's obvious). Just waste that time on FB games or dating sites. Once they come out of their room they can find games like 40K and Magic.
I was in a Combat Zone 04,05, 08, 09, 11, 12.... Boardum is the bug that goes around, not cross fire and bullets. Artillery and incoming rounds are like clockwork, but that doesn't have to stop the game if the alarms dont go off.

lol I remember playing 40k in Bagram on Thanksgiving 2004.
gak, I was painting a dreadnought in Karma Iraq between firefights. People get time to wargame, it's usually no problem.

Sorry, I should have said "The Wild West" instead of Karma
Oh and thanks for your service.

Bagram, chinese rocket destroyed our table. No one got hurt or anything because we were out on mission but the 40 terrain was never seen again, well itty bitty pieces were. In acutal war you do have down time which usually included a game of 40k or painting. Heck the phone ordering service started to learn our names by the time we left, I remeber a guy saying "Hey there's quite a few of you guys ordering!"
Even when we were in Ramadi, Iraq we have plenty of time between missions for games. It also gave you something to talk about when missions ran into the wee hours in the mornings to keep awake.

It beats waiting for someone to get bit by a scorpion lol (as that was really the only other alternative other than playing cards for the 3437536192th time)

My last deployment to Afghanistan in 2011, my buddy brought some of his army and we split it and played on a pool table in the MWR on a FOB.
The most difficult part is getting it there and back and intact, usually through tough boxes and the mail or unit shipping containers with personal gear.

We had about 8 guys in our unit and a few more in one of our support battalions that played 40k. Most of us left our stuff stateside in storage, but one of our mechanics had his Nid army shipped to him to paint. We honestly didn't have time to play 40k, but we did get a few sessions of D&D in when we could. The Nid guy was able to get most of his army painted and shipped back relatively intact. Good luck to you OP!

Thanks, I am surprised there were as many war-zone war-gamers on here. I will post my games as they developed. It is hard to get steady scheduled games, but any game is better then just wasting time on FB. I am hoping to paint all my Blood Angels over here. IF I do and I am still over here, it will be 6th ed Chaos and Dark Angels Fo Sho....
Oh, and thanks for serving vets...... Home of the free because of the brave and all that.

Every once in awhile, Dakka lights up with a combat zone thread. A couple of years ago there was quite the thread showing the improvised tables, terrain, and even someone's painting "table". I always enjoy these threads, and I really enjoy the "last post" where the OP is rotated home, safe and sound.
