I've finally decided to take the plunge into Dystopian Wars and am ordering the rules and French naval box. I want to order a couple of other ships at the same time, but am rather torn as to which to order.

I really like the big double hull dreadnought and the large airship (not the flying HQ), but what else should I grab? The fleet carrier? More cruisers (flying or surface)? Another battleship?

Any and all advice will be highly appreciated.

You'll probably want a box or two of escorts, and maybe a carrier. From there, a dreadnought, or more cruisers is a good bet, followed by more frigates, destroyers, and the like. The carrier is important because that gives you another 6 tiny flyer tokens, plus you get two free wings of them as "local air support" The carrier gives you a place to re-arm and refuel them. The escorts allow you to help keep one of your big boats (the battleship, carrier, or dreadnought) safer from bombers and torpedoes. Read through the rules, take a look at what frenchie ships do what, and plan from there

I made the exact same purchase last week! Thank you for asking the same question I was going to ask! :p

The French don't have any escorts, but their capital ships do have better armour, and the Cloud generator also helps to resist damage. I'd suggest jump straight to the carrier, or maybe get another Squadron of Frigates, or maybe some Destroyers.

I personally just want a load of Marseille Cruisers (floating ones), and the Magenta Mk 1 pocket Battleship (floating version of the ship you get in the starter box).

Hmm, perhaps I got a little overexcited? Oh well. It's already shipped so no turning back now.

Daddy like! Have fun painting them up!
I must say, painting up the Magenta MkII Pocket Battleship from the Starter box has been one of the most enjoyable paints I have ever done (1st ever naval model, y'see?)

My box of floaty goodness arrived today. And I'm psyched enough that I'm going to take them to my FLGS tomorrow and play instead of practicing for a Warmachine tournament in 2 weeks.

Played tonight. Excellent game, and I love the French fleet. Amazing how much fear the Heat Lance causes without even getting in range.

Yeah, the heat lance is a great weapon. It allows you to have a real late-game threat, as it will still be throwing good dice even with the Magenta having a ton of damage thanks to Redoubtable.

My fleet keeps growing. I've added subs, multiple light and meduim flyers as well as a Magenta Mk.I.

Loving this game. And watching DNs trying to play keep away from my Heat Lances is a hoot. Poor things just can't get away from multiple squadrons of Toulons.

Ha! The Germa... Err. The Prussians are on my side this time! So I don't have to practice being a cheese eating surrender monkey.

I just have to keep working on the classic French disdain for ze 'orrible Anglais, and their ridiculously high freeboard ships. And I can even do that while wishing I had tin cans half as nasty as theirs. Probably. Maybe? Anybody want to trade Algeria for a decent Frigate design?

Yeah the Tribal cruiser really isn't all that good...
Though the Agincourt goes a long way to replacing it

Asking the Frenchies to buy anything labelled Agincourt is going to be a tough one.

I've realized it really was a mistake to offer anything for a frigate. The Lyon is a damned good melee frigate. It really kicks ass once it gets in and amongst the enemy squadrons.

And as strong as the French mediums are it really doesn't matter if the Lyon lacks range and the Chevalier has a limited arc of fire. Besides, soon we'll have the Alma flying frigate with a 360 deg turret. Can not wait.
