i've recently ordered a few warhammer 40k models , deciding on building a imperial guard army to start . After lurking through the forums for ideas on what model to use as my warlord i learned that instead of a command officer ( correct me if i'm wrong ) i could use a lord commissar. So after a visit to the HQ section for Imperial Guard on the games-workshop website i ordered the model i liked the best , the Commissar with bolt pistol . After looking up paint schemes for Lord commissars i realized there is actually an official model . I know substitutions are allowed for similar or converted models but just to be sure by a vote of opinion would most people be upset by the distinction if i used a Commissar model as a Lord Commissar ?

I can't imagine anyone really making a issue of it.

"Because 6th edition is the ruleset that 40k fans deserve, but not the one they need right now... and so we'll argue over minutia... because GW can take it... because faqs and erratas require effort and money... they remain a silent rule maker, a neglectful protector... a Space Marine fanboy..."

Pssh.

Does he look like a commissar? Yes. Is he equipped the same as a lord commissar? Yes.

Anyone who complains deserves to be smacked upside the head.

There's no distinction between the models. A commissar is a lord commissar is a commissar.
Fluff wise there's no markings or anything to distinguish them.

Unnessesarily extravegant word of the week award goes to jcress410 for this:

The only real difference is that the Lord Commissar has a bitchin' cape and shoulderpads. I was planning on using the powerfist Commissar as a Lord Commissar myself. Go nuts!

He also has laurels sculpted onto his cap. And, as everyone knows, laurels equals badass.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

Many people wouldn't even notice unless you told them, much like WYSIWYG on Tyranids.

Except in this case I think even people playing the army themselves wouldn't even think of the distinction.

Can't imagine this ever being an issue unless you have some prick scrutinizing your army, being out to get you. And even then, I doubt he could get anyone on his team.
