Subject: Horus Heresy: The Loyalist's of Istvaan III

Hi,
I am embarking on a Horus Heresy flavoured mission. After reading the first five novels, and loving every page, I have decided to try and convert a Heresy Era Space Marine army based on the battle of Istvaan III from "Galaxy in Flames", in which Horus attempts to wipe out the remaining loyalists elements from his own legion, the Sons of Horus, as well as those from the Death Guard, World Eater's and Emperor's Children.
These first few models are based on my visions of my favourite characters from the series so far, those being Garviel Loken, Tarik Torgaddon, Saul Tarvitz, and Nathaniel Garro. I also did a model for Captain Ehrlen, a minor character, but the leader of the Loyalist elements of the World Eater's.
First up is GARVIEL LOKEN.
I used the Champion body from the Marneus Calgar box set, as I liked the helmet and general pose. However, I removed his power sword, as Loken uses a chainsword in the novel and I wanted to maintain a relative level of accuracy. I have never used green stuff to any great length before, simply using it to fill in cracks. This was my first "sculpt". I am pretty happy with it, it needs a little touching up, but I am aware that as it was my first time it was never going to look Golden Demon standard! The reason for the sculpt was to cover the ultramarine symbols, plus I envision Loken to have pretty minimalist armor. His banner is due to the fact that Loken famously rejects the title of Sons of Horus upon realizing that Horus has betrayed them, and takes up the name of the Luna Wolves once more. I also took off part of the plastic rune, to make it a number 10 symbol, as Loken is the Captain of the 10th Company.

Second up was Tarik Torgaddon, the 2nd Company Captain and Loken's fellow Mournival member.
For Tarik I used the main body from one of the Chapter Master's. I chose the head that I felt captured his image, plus I hate the generic look of Space Marine heads, and felt they didn't bring across a lot of character. This Catachan fighter head did the trick though. I also gave him a banner from the Space Wolves Sprue, as well as a quick sculpt on his helmet to give him a crest similar to Loken's.
Automatically Appended Next Post: NOTE: Realised I have still got the Ultramarine belt buckle to sort out on Loken, only noticed it in the photo!

Have you thought about getting some MK IV Maximus armor off of forgeworld? That would be what these guys would be wearing if you wanna to be more accurate. I'm very interested to see one of these guys fully painted.

Sorry about the poor photos, camera is a little old. Paint job is up next.
As to forgeworld, I would if I had the money :( however, I have a bitz box full to bursting, and I do enjoy creating a model out of random bits and bobs hopefully the effect is good

Here are two more additions, Saul Tarvitz of the Emperor's Children and Captain Erhlen of the World Eater's.
With these two, I wanted to make them look as different as possible, as the two Legion's are compelte opposites in terms of appearance as well as the way they conduct warfare.
They both comprise of the main bodies of two more Chapter Masters.
Tarvitz's model was the one with the most eagle symbols, and looked a lot more elegant and fitting of an Emperor's Children Captain. Erhlen's is much stockier, and a lot more solid. I wanted him too have the look of a gladiator. His shield is from the Ogre box set, but I will paint it to look like the all consuming maw of the World Eater's symbol.

Also I wouldn't be too bothered with all the marines looking the same, remember that they are all "genetically altered" from their primarch (little horus looks just like horus). So it actually works out...I wonder if that is just an easy plot device so they don't have to mold so many different heads? hmmm.....

Haha true. Though these four are all from different Legions so I figured it did make sense for them to look a little different. I always envisioned Tarvitz as bald but most of the fan work has him with long blond hair, and I had that head floating about so thought I would use it.
I should finish Nathaniel Garro by tomorrow!

Hey bloodlance, it's another one from the Masters of the Chapter box set. I think it is the Master of Recruits??? He is the one that has a bolter and small power sword in the original box. I then used the power sword i had originally taken from the Chapter Champion model (see Loken conversion). And simply did a hand swap for the bolt pistol. Hope that helps.
