So is it just me or did they change the fluff to the BA's haveing the red thirst before the death of Sanguinius. I was always under the impression that the psychic scream he released in his Death is what caused the red thirst to start happening to the BA's

They did change the nature of the
Spoiler:
Red Thirst. In the book it's a one way ticket to crazy town and the Emperor's Peace, and that is a new thing.

I'm not sure if there is any other fluff on the origin of the Red Thirst. The Black Rage is most definitely tied into the Primarch's death.

ETA: Not sure if spoiler tags are needed when the thread title warns about spoilers, added them anyway.

Guys don't forget Spoiler tag please....

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."

Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

Yes but still I would like to read impressions of the book without reading some juicy part....

Given that it's a novel, it wouldn't be a change but rather an alternate interpretation. I don't think there is any reason just yet to believe that GW would pick it up.

Just something to keep in mind.

Per the codex: There is no true history on the Red Thirst, now the Black Rage is the Psychic whiplash that resulted from the death of Sanguinius. The Red Thirst is still debated on when it emerged in the timeline. Bishop99 the difference between the two is the Red Thirst is a blood lust where the Angels actually can taste and have an addict drive to want to taste their enemies blood(almost like a vampire, which is where some say they are vampires except they don't need the blood to survive); the Black Rage on the other hand is a crazed indifference to all and anything living, their hatred towards the fact that their Primarch is dead is enough to actually kill everything around them until either they are killed or their is nothing left, this state of mind is irreversible(except in some chars.) and once they reach this point they must be terminated.

Isn't the Black Rage the culmination of the Red Thirst?

Anyway, the book seems to imply that this was a very rare occurrence before the Heresy/Horus' trap/Sanguinius' death. If you think of it in those terms, and his death just pushing it into overdrive (along with gradual degeneration of the geneseed), it doesn't really contradict the established fluff.

Fluff for the Fluff God!

I think the Black Rage has always been presented as the genetic memory of Sanguinus' fight against Horus overwhelming the marine's personality. The handwavium seems to involve the psychic link that the BA had to their primarch.

The Red Thirst is a generic battle rage marked with a literal taste for blood, and the Black Rage actually involves the loss of personality as the marine believes he is the primarch fighting on Terra and eventually against Horus.

I actually felt that that bit seemed forced. YMMV.

Two things that don't have much bearing on the book, but are of interest due to their impact on two regularly rage inducing topics are:
Spoiler:

1) The BA get spit out of the warp at Ultramar and are hailed by big blue himself. Yet somehow the BA and Sanguinus show up at Terra for the siege and the Ultramarines and Guilliman do not. Obvious question is, why not?

2) The status of the Thousand Sons regarding traitor or loyalist is listed as uncertain, and this is well enough after the events of Istvaan and the sending of the Wolves to Prospero that it could mean that Russ' orders were not 'nuke from orbit'.

well here are some responses
Spoiler:
i havent finished the book but the only mention of the thousand sons so far is in reference to the Nikea Creed. I also think that Guilliman being the master "tactician" didnt want to lose the empire to save Terra especially when you have the Big E himself defending it so why risk the warp storm

The Horus Heresy books have been dropping quite a few shout-outs to those two. I'm starting to wonder how far they'll go, if they'll gradually present a backstory but not name the lost legions.
