So, with my picking up of Malifaux, and my choice in Crews (Colette, btw), and in a recent purchase of a particular documentary... I realized that I am on abit of a kick for a certain style of story/character, etc.
What I mean is, I am a huge fan of Carnivale (the HBO series that unfortunately got cancelled before it was done), "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", the burlesque show... ya know, the mezmerizing of people with shows, magic acts, music etc. etc... very visually weird kinda stuff.
I just bought Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes", but I know that won't really be enough...
My question to dakka here, is do any of you have any other suggestions for that oddball style of Steampunk, or other Carnival/Circus type of books, movies, games, etc. I should add in good dystopic stuff as well... because well, I do love stuff like "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and Blade Runner (same thing really, just ones a book and ones a movie)

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has a good steampunk feel to it, and do a lesser extend the new Sherlock Holmes movies. Abney Park has some fun lighthearted Steampunk music. Anime has some good shows that will satisfy your steampunk, burlesque, and dystopia needs in a single show.

Now, my wife and I love the new Holmes movies... Do you have any more specific Anime movies/shows to point me towards?? I have seen/loved one called Last Exile, which was definitely more in the steampunk realm.

There's a ton of anime that has a steampunk vibe to it or is a full blown steampunk universe. Trigun and Fullmetal Alchemist are the first ones that come to mind, but those aren't the best examples of a real steampunk setting.

I just happened to see Steamboy last month, and it was pretty good and should fit your steampunk needs nicely. Another series I have enjoyed was Fullmetal Alchemist, it's not exactly steampunk but has some of the same vibes as that genre. For laughs there is always "Wild Wild West". Ninja'd by Amaya on FMA.

Tin Man was a pretty good 2 part series set after the Wizard of Oz and that had pretty good steampunkish technology, though the technology itself doesn't really play a huge part.

So, steam punk aside for a moment, does anyone read anything that could be considered close to Carnivale?
