Thoughts?

I've been considering space wolf allies for 1500+ games. Trying to keep it low points cost to fit in more IG.

Rune priest for psychic defence and a squad of grey hunters with a power fist for counter charges on my infantry. Possibly in a razorback to provide some BS4 twin-linked lascannons.

My idea is more about area control than expecting them to get their points back. My enemy might think twice about moving his psycher near a rune priest. Therefore defending my tanks from Mephyston or that Hive Tyrant charging.

Possibly delay a charge on some vets if they think they're going to be tied up even longer by a counter assault from grey hunters. Also an extremely durable unit to just sit on an objective an pump out ap5.

I'm very new to the idea of allies, and putting these expensive units in my (normally) cost effective IG is daunting. So I was hoping for some advice either way. Also my IG always lack Elites, with the exception of Marbo, I never take elites.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

I've never tried puppy allies but there's a lot of discussion about them and they seem excellent on paper for the reasons you described (Rune Priest especially).

I've allied SoBs and regular SM with mixed success, but I imagine you could get some great returns in higher point levels (especially when you double up the FOC at 2k)

As Space Wolves, I've ally with Imperial Guard with great success. They're a great ally combo. I'd recommend taking some Grey Hunters and a Rune Priest for sure. That should run you less than 300pts if you're being fairly reasonable. I'd recommend:

Rune Priest (Bolt Pistol)
9x Grey Hunters (Melta or Plasmagun, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, Rhino)
TOTAL: 300pts (305pts with Plasmagun)

If you want to put some more punch in, consider a Lone Wolf in Terminator Armour with a Chainfist + Storm Shield, a squad of Thunderwolf Cavalry and/or some Long Fangs.

Actually Im going to pick up Kroot for allies. Gives me a solid HTH contigent and a decent gun. Fragile but excellent for counter assault. Cheaper than Ogryn.

I'll be interested to see how they do.

Cheaper than Ogryn, certainly, but not really in the same class of unit (High Str/T, multi-wound, lots of shots). Then again, you wouldn't need the extra 70pt babysitter with Kroot.

What would you do for the Mandatory HQ though?
I would personally go for a Deathstorm+ or Centurion Shas'El and stick him with Fire Warriors, unit size dependent on points availability to camp an objective in your deployment.

I was actually thinking of modeling a Kroot Ethereal or a Kroot Commander (Mod it up with Kroot type trophies).

Another option is a bunch of Jungle Fighters with modded weapons and call them "counts as" Kroot. Regular Dogs (from my Mordheim days) to use as 'counts as' Kroot hounds.

An Imperial Commander in an advanced suit of power armor for the commander.

Vespid could be imperial guardsmen on combat drugs to 'count as Vespid'. The drugs cause them to be very 'flighty' (thus the low leadership) unless lead by a Vet Sgt (the Strain Leader).

This is purley themed army. Not for Mathhammer.

I had fun with a traitor guard list last weekend. 10 Plague marines on foot behind 20 basic guardsman was able to advance up centrefield and take a horrendous amount of punishment. Chaos terminators gave me some hard-hitting deep strike goodness and a winged daemon prince hung around my Russ to 'encourage' fast threats and drop pods to stay away from it. But the best thing was that my Commissars were all cult leaders, which was kewl.

It was my Avatar first, AF stoled it.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm not keen on tau, I don't get excited by any of the HQ units, and bringing kroot just seems lacklustre in my opinion.

I had considered BA, especially with a sanguinary priest to act as a shield for my gun line. It'd be hard for my opponent to ignore them. Seems like SM are not a bad choice, I'll definitely consider it more.

Traitor guard sounds fun, but I'd be too tempted to model them differently. Maybe one day...

On a side note, I dislike the double FOC at 2k points. Just defeats the object of having one.

I used that for an 1850 tournament.

Dude...like...I can't even...

It was just gross. Rerolls on a 40 man blob....so many dice....so many hits...

No need for voxes because my blob was LD10, and since it was already rerolling with Prescience from the priest, I could BiD on HWS's. Not to mention, if they ever had to go to ground, they were 2+ and could use "Get Back Into The Fight" to be combat effective next turn.

The Grey hunters headed by a StormShield WolfGuard held objectives like a champ. They...just wouldn't die...

Pasquisher killed every Land Raider in 1-2 shots.

And of course, the obligatory flyers. to run train on everything.

If you pulled both flyers and some little bits though; you'd have one hell of a 1500pt list.
