Hi dudes and dudetts

I have been reading the Nick Kyme Salamander books and they are awesome. I loved them so much that I went online and ordered some marines to make a salamanders army. I love that the salamanders care about regular humans, I have a grey knight army because I thought they were the ultimate warriors for humanity but after lots of fluff reading they are really rather brutal and definatly not that considerate of humans. They just blow up worlds if there might be a daemon on it (exageration im sure but you get my drift). To that end I want to make a green army and I want them to be really fluffy. Reading the fluff to me currently means, lots of melta and flamers, very few speeders (havent come across bikes yet) and lots of dudes in power armour both of the tactical and devestator type with slightly more tactical (not sure on including first company yet).

I have bought:
  • Vulkan

  • 2 sets of 10 PA marines

  • 2 sets of devastators

  • 3 drop pods

  • My current list looks like:
  • Vulkan 190pts

  • 10 tactical marines with melta, multimelta, sarge with PW and Combi-flamer, dedicated drop pod with storm bolter 240pts

  • 10 tactical marines with melta, multimelta, sarge with PW and Combi-flamer, dedicated drop pod with storm bolter 240pts

  • 5 devastators with 4 missiles 150pts

  • 5 devastators with 4 plasma cannons 190pts

  • Total is 1010pts leaving 240 to spare

I have thought about just adding another copy of the 10 man squad as that is 240pts bang on and I have thought about droping the power weapons on the sarges and getting a full 10 man stern guard squad with some combi weapons. Does anyone have any good advice for a fluffy set of units that costs 240 points baring in mind I have a spare drop pod that I want to use?

    Cheers

Sternguard, in the spare pod, with Vulcan.

Paired heavy flamers, some combi melta/flamers to taste. Maybe a CC weapon for the sarge.

That aside, I'm not a huge fan of your Dev squad load out. You pay a lot of points for the plasma there, and once you start taking wounds, it goes away fast. And your opponent won't just ignore that level of firepower. If you want to keep them, I'd go with a 10 man squad, 2xPC, 2xML.

I'm not sure about the new fluff, but salamanders were also big on techmarines IIRC. A thunderfire cannon might be a nice addition.

TH/SS termis are also very popular. Stick a 5 man in a LRR and crush stuff. A bit over your points, but something to consider.

    Fluffy avoiding Landspeeders....

How about a full drop pod list with Dreadnoughts...

    Vulkan 190
    Mastr of the Forge
Drop Pod with Devastator with 4x MM
Drop Pod with DN w MM and Heavy Flamer
Drop Pod with DN w MM and Heavy Flamer
Drop Pod Tactical with Melta and Heavy Bolter
Drop Pod Tactical with Metal and Heavy Bolter
Drop Pod Tactical with Melta and Heavy Bolter
Drop Pod Sternguard with 2 Heavy Flamers
Drop Pod with DN w MM and Heavy Flamer
Drop Pod with DN w MM and Heavy Flamer

I switched the MM in the Tacticals instead of MM to give you a weapon you are willing to move. It can still snapfire and move.
I left the Devastator but switched it to MM to force you into a fluffy Salamander fight. Up close and personal.

The Sternguard could be given Combi-meltas as can be the Tactical Sergeants.
Half of your drop pods get to drop on the 1st turn so 3 dreadnoughts and the devastator drop. The dreads drop close while the devastators roll in at medium range.

@Nevelon I like the idea of a thunderfire cannon as they are very fluffy with a techmarine. I also like the big devstator squad idea.

@DAaddict I like the full drop list but i am pretty sure its way over 1250 pts. Having MM devs is cool though and HB on the tacs.

Adding the ideas together I get:

    Vulcan 190

Drop pod: 10 tacs with melta, heavy bolter, combi flamer, melta bombs 225
Drop pod: 10 tacs with melta, heavy bolter, combi flamer, melta bombs 225

    Drop pod: 10 devs with 4 x MM (combat squad into 2 x 2 MM units) 265
    10 devs with 4 x ML (combat squad into 2 x 2 ML units) 230
    Thunderfire cannon 100

    which totals 1235

    Just a thought...

    2 x MM/HF Dreads with Drop Pods. 300 pts.

This is instead of the ML Devs and Thunderfire.

The dreads may die but they take you up to 5 drop pods so you are dropping 3 initially and then 2 in reserve.
Drop the dreads and the MM devs in the initial drop; That leaves you flexibility to add the tac squads wherever you need them.

and if you wantbit totally fluffy. dontbtake the heavy bolters. stick to meltas/flamers...

saying heavy bolters is fluffy is like adding a bike squad :-\ i sayadd the two droppod dreads.

@Lordjig6 I'm not sure saying heavy bolters is fluffy is false, the salamanders still use all of the weapons they just use more meltas and flamers, the novels have many heavy bolters in but bikes are against the fluff. I think there may be some confusion between fluff and vulcans TL melta flamer rules.

@DAaddict, I only have the three drop pods right now and purchasing two more plus 2 dreads is a little pricey for me. I also am putting vulcan with one of the tac squads so bringing one down to start suits me I think.

Moving it up to 1500 I would add a dread but I was thinking maybe an iron clad one, AV13 seems fluffy for an army of blacksmiths. Are iron clads good?

Ironclads fill the same role as a MM/HF dread in a drop pod. But they do it bigger, better, tougher, and with more style. And, naturally, cost more points.

They have a number of quirky rules you don't see often (move through cover on a walker, access to defensive grenades) This lets you use some tricks you might not normally expect from a suicide drop dread.

Plus the kit is fully stocked with options and a lot of fun to put together.

@Iukaz i wasnt saying they dont allow it. (they DO allow bikes) im saying that if you want it to be themed and fluffy an legion born from fire would use fire rather than heavy bolters... I dont confuse fluff with rules... I have a fluffly salamander list and have done before this Vulkan rule... i remember the days when they were I3....

All i was saying was that if you want a fluffy list you have to make some sacrifices.

But it depends how dedicated you are to a purist theme, ive seen people justify landspeeders because they have a multimentla on *facepalm*...

Everyone has theyre own taste in fluff... i like mine pure. thats all.

And i fully agree with you for the ironclads, go with them they rock and

@Nevelon the ironclad kit is SICK.

If you put MM Devs in a pod, be sure to add a combi-melta to the Sarge. Twin linked snap shots give you a chance, but adding that single melta at regular BS bumps the odds up to over 2 hits on the turn they land.

Not sure about fluff, but Vulkan goes well with THammer Terms even if they are walking.

There is a place beneath those ancient ruins in the moor…

I would go for melta+combimelta on the tactical squads. Landing and firing 2 melta shots is very good thing indeed.

I would bring an ADL with quadgun, this is good to shoot down flyers but also to hide dev. squads. I wouldn't use dev. squads.
Personally I would give the tactical squads ML, hide them behide the ADL, then land just the combimelta+melta in turn 2, this gives you the most firepower turn 1 and scoring units at the back.

I am trying MM attack bikes as the antiflyer. TL BS1 melta shot seems to do the job.

The only other thing to say is that you will find it easier at higher points. You can fluffy and competitive by about 2000 points.
