I was doubting about whether to put this here or in the general disc. forum. But I'll post it here because its more appropriate.

Lately I'm having problems really getting the most out of the time i have for modelling and painting. I pretty much start out fine but then after a few layers, gs work or scenery basing, i for some reason slow down and don't really know what to do anymore which ends up using like 60% of my time on staring blankly to my table. Now I'm wondering how i can use my time more efficient, and well the (easiest) answer comes up rather fast - which is planning however its not that easy, at least for me.

However I'm relying on the experience of the inter-webs to give me some good pointers. Which can be about either efficiency with painting or use of green stuff, batch spraying or other things. My table is a mess at the moment so for me my first move will be cleaning it up enough to start new mini's.

Thanks for reading and/or replying! Hopefully this proves to be useful to more people.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

You're suffering from a bit of burn out / boredom it seems. Happens to us all, especially when doing something that's quicker to picture in your head than to actually do (so blending layering etc). You know exactly what to do, but in your head it only takes a couple of seconds. This leads to a bit of frustration, which makes you want to stop.

Set a timer (for an hour, 30 minutes, whatever). This is 'work time'. Be painting for that 30 minutes, DO NOT STOP. Then take a break. Come back, and set the timer again. A bit of music while you work can help too. You'll rapidly get back in the habit of sitting and churning stuff out or having to push for a 'few more minutes' to get a particular task done. It helps remind you that time is precious.

I have to do this fairly regularly.

One of the biggest helps I've found to avoiding staring blankly at my table is to have a game plan. Know what I want the end product to look like and know how to get there.

A little bit of preplanning goes a long way. I often do this while on break or lunch at work so that when I actually have a chance to sit down and work on minis I know what I want to do.

I keep a sketchpad in my car and jot down notes, diagrams, designs and anything else that pops into my head that might be useful for later. By the time I start working I know what needs to be done in what order.

Double plus doodling insane ork war machines makes a great way to fill up a lunch hour.

Hey thanks (assumed) guys!

I'll definitely try those things and see how it helps. Especially the timer thing seems promising (since more action will be packed in shorter time frames).

Also the pre-planning concept seems promising although i like to think i got things pretty much figured out. Another thing that really annoys me is that i paint most base layers (and/or primer) by hand. I only have an old Skull White primer which i rarely use. And suffice to say doing that by hand is super time consuming.

Anyway thanks a bunch!
