Updated, thanks for the feedback!

Hey guys, so after a lot more play testing and player feedback we've got the latest version of our tournament guidelines for critique. I'll summarize the changes to that you guys don't have to read it all if you don't want to.

Essentially a lot of the stuff we were worried about in tournament play wasn't anything to really be worried about at all! We just had to get something out there for our attendees fast, so it was a start!

We've brought our mission and the format even more in line with 6th ed to keep it simple and easy. All it is now is playing multiple 6th ed missions at the same time, with all the other 6th ed rules and only very minor modifications.

=No more modified KP, just regular old KP to keep it simple.
=No more modified Hammer and Anvil, playing it straight up works fine.
=No more modified mysterious objectives, they work fine as is.
=Skyshields and Fortresses of Redemption are in.
=First Blood is in.

Here it is in entirety if anyone wants to read it. We will update Duelcon and Comikaze with these now so people know what to expect. Thanks again for all the feedback, we really appreciate it! We also feel confident we'll be able to jump back up to 1,750 points by the time we get to BAO as people get more familiar with the game.

6th ed 40K Tournament Guidelines
Points: 1,500pts
We are going with 1500pts for these early 6th ed tournaments as we’ve found that the new rules slow the game down quite a bit, and we are sure people are going to be taking more time looking up rules, rolling up Warlord Traits, etc. and would rather have more time per round so as not to rush anyone. As we go through the season and people get more accustomed to the game, we will start to increase the points cap.

Tournament Format

We are using 2 hour and 15 minute rounds with 15 minute breaks between rounds and 30 minutes for lunch. The tournament schedule will be posted on the website.

Missions
Round 1: Bay Area Open Scenario Alpha, Hammer and Anvil Deployment

Round 2: Bay Area Open Scenario Beta, Dawn of War Deployment, The Scouring

Round 3: Bay Area Open Scenario Gamma, Vanguard Strike Deployment

Round 4: Bay Area Open Scenario Beta, Dawn of War Deployment, Big Guns Never Tire

Round 5: Bay Area Open Scenario Alpha, Hammer and Anvil Deployment

Round 6: Bay Area Open Scenario Gamma, Vanguard Strike Deployment

Round 7: Bay Area Open Scenario Alpha, Dawn of War Deployment

The Bay Area Open Scenario is one we have built over a great deal of time, play testing and player feedback. It is a scenario that strives for fairness, and simplicity with multiple paths to victory. We want you to focus on playing your best game, not focusing on trying to figure out a mission you aren’t familiar with.

The Bay Area Open scenario has 3 Victory Conditions always happening simultaneously plus 3 bonus points. Each is worth a varying number of Victory Points dependent upon the mission (Alpha, Beta or Gamma). There are also 3 Bonus Points per mission. The Player that earns the most Victory Points during a game, wins. If both players earn the same amount, they tie. There are no degrees of victory, if you win by 1 point or 12, it is just a win. The player packets will have a score sheet for each mission clearly showing how much each objective is worth for each game to make it easy to keep track of.

1. Victory Condition 1: The Emperor’s Will. Each player places an objective on a 40mm base in their deployment zone, after deployment zones have been decided prior to deploying their forces. This objective must be 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective. The player that controls more of these at game’s end wins this Victory Condition, if tied; neither player scores the points for this victory condition. In Alpha this is worth 2 points, in Beta 3 Points, in Gamma 4 points.

2. Victory Condition 2: Crusade. Three objectives on 25mm bases are placed outside of either player’s deployment zones before the roll for first turn. One is always placed in the exact middle of the board. The other two by each player (player rolling highest places the first objective), at least 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective. The player controlling the majority of these objectives at game’s end wins. If both players control the same amount, neither achieves this objective. In Alpha this is worth 3 points, in Beta 4 points, in Gamma 2 points.

3. Victory Condition 2: Purge the Alien. Each unit fully destroyed or broken at game’s end is worth 1 Kill Point. In Big Guns Never Tire and The Purging mission types, Heavy Support and Fast Attack units respectively are worth 2 KPs. In Alpha this victory condition is worth 4 points, in Beta 2 Points, in Gamma 3 points.

The Bay Open Scenario also uses Book Bonus Points in every mission. The Bonus Points are worth 1 Victory Point each and are the same for every game.
1. Bonus Point 1: Slay the Warlord.

2. Bonus Point 2: Line Breaker.

3. Bonus Point 3: First Blood.

Every game uses the book rules for Reserves, Night Fight, Seize the Initiative, Random Game Length, controlling objectives, etc.
Mission Order of Operations

1. Roll for Warlord Traits and Psyker Powers. Each player rolls 1D6, chooses any of the three Warlord Traits with that number for their trait. If a player rolls a psyker power they can’t use, they may roll again until they get one they can use.
2. Roll for Night Fighting.
3. Roll for First Turn. The player rolling highest chooses their deployment zone and deploys their Emperor’s Will objective. This objective must be 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective. The player going second does the same.
4. Place Crusade Objectives. Players roll off, player rolling highest places first objective. One objective always goes in the center of the board. These objectives must be outside of either deployment zone and must be more than 6” from a table edge and more than 12” from another objective.
5. Place Fortifications if any are present. The player that won the first turn roll off places theirs first. If a large Fortification (Bastion, Skyshield, or Fortress of Redemption) is placed over a piece of terrain, remove the piece of terrain and replace it with the Fortification.
6. Deploy forces, with the player that won the roll off deploying first.
7. Game then proceeds as normal.

Allowed Armies

• All current Codices, and White Dwarf armies will be allowed.
• Allies per the Rule Book will be allowed.
• Forge World units will be allowed so long as they are neither a Super Heavy nor Gargantuan Creature. The most recent version of the rules must be used. This means not just the “40K Approved” units, but any that do not fall within the above restrictions.
• Forge World Army Lists will not be allowed.
• Each player MUST have his pertinent rulebook with him to show his opponent.

Warlord Traits and Psychic Powers

1. Warlord Traits will be determined using the following modified system: Each player rolls a die and then chooses which Trait with that number he wishes to use.
2. If you roll a psychic power the model can’t use (such as Broodlord rolling a shooting attack), you may reroll on the table until you get something you can use.

Rules Judgments

Rules issues will be dealt with swiftly by a roaming judge. We use a hierarchy for determining rules issues as follows:
1. Main Rule Book
2. FAQs and Erratas
3. Consensus of judges present at the time. Please note, that these judgments are final.

Painting

All models must be painted to a 3 color minimum. We count primer as a color. If you have any models that are not painted to a 3 color minimum, you will be ineligible for prize support at the end of the event. We will use a Paint Rubric for judging paint.
Bracketing

We use Swiss Pairings, meaning that players with the same record play each other. Pairings within a bracket are randomly determined first round (friends and club mates can request not to play each other first round) and then by strength of schedule thereafter. For final rankings, the field will be stratified by accumulated Victory Points.
Comp and Sports

There will be no comp scores at this event. We feel that the game has an inbuilt comp system with the rulebooks and Codices. We do not feel that a second, player created level of comp is necessary. So bring whatever army you want to play!
Sportsmanship will be handled as a simple thumbs-up, thumbs-down check box on the results sheet.
The temptation to ding someone on sports after a tough loss is often too much for many players to resist. We therefore are providing a very narrowly defined set of terms under which a player may mark their opponent with a thumbs down mark on sportsmanship. This system is intended to punish those who are being abusive, but to not allow chimpmunking. After a great deal of real world use, we have found this system to work very well.
Legitimate reasons to give an opponent a thumbs down on sports:
1. Your opponent was 15 or more minutes late to the round.
2. Your opponent was verbally abusive. This does not mean you argued with your opponent or that your personalities clashed, but that they were verbally abusive and insulting.
3. Your opponent intentionally cheated. Be prepared to support your case to a judge.
4. Your opponent slow played. We define slow playing as not completing 4 game turns of play. In the case of 20 or less minutes left to play, divide the time remaining between players to complete one full GAME turn. Time each other during this period to ensure that each player has an equal amount of time to complete a full game turn. If one player does not finish within their limit, the other player can force them to stop and then begin their turn. This mechanic is in place to ensure no one is slow played out of a turn of play.
What does NOT constitute a thumbs down on sports?
1. You argued over rules with your opponent.
2. Your opponent beat you.
3. You didn’t like your opponent’s army.
4. Your opponent likes Star Trek Voyager. Picard was the best!! NERD RAGE!
A negative mark on sportsmanship will be met with administrative action as follows:
1. First thumbs down: A verbal warning from a judge, up to reversing a win to a loss.
2. Second thumbs down: Reversing a win to a loss, up to disqualification from any prize support.
3. Third thumbs down: disqualification from any prize support, up to expulsion from the event with no refund of the ticket price.
4. Fourth thumbs down: Expulsion from the event with no refund of the ticket price.
WYSIWYG

All models are expected to be WYSIWYG as much as is reasonable. Proxies are not permitted. Counts As armies with counts as allies will only be permitted if they represent a clearly concerted effort to build a unique army around an obvious theme. For example, an Adeptus Mechanicus army using extensive kit bashing and conversions will be fine. If you go this route, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A HANDOUT TO SHOW YOUR OPPONENT THAT SHOWS WHAT EACH UNIT IN YOUR ARMY IS ALONG WITH ITS STATS AND PERTENANT RULES! You must also present this to them prior to the game so that they have time to understand what they are playing against. There will be no exceptions to this.
If your army uses only a single Codex but if for example you have Crimson Fists models using the Blood Angels Codex, or Chaos models using the Space Wolves Codex, that is acceptable. Allies for this type of army however, MUST be represented by their actual models. This is to avoid confusion. No exceptions.
If you are using converted or scratch built models with Forge World rules, this is acceptable so long as your model is as close to the represented model as possible in terms of equipment, size and shape. We will not be lenient with this.
If you have any questions about your army, ask us prior to the event so that we can let you know if what you have will be acceptable or not.
Modeling for Advantage

There is a fine line between creative freedom and modeling for advantage. We do not wish to stifle anyone’s creativity, but in the end, this is a game that relies heavily upon the physical characteristics of the models being used.
Modeling for advantage will be handled on a case by case basis. To resolve a possible abusive situation, follow these steps:
1. Ask the player to play the model as if it were a GW standard, modern version.
2. Call a judge to ask for a judgement.
3. Possibly substitute the model with an appropriate replacement.
Examples of what we consider modeling for advantage:
1.)Using out of date and inappropriately sized models such as the rogue trader era Eldar Avatar (which currently is a large, monstrous creature model but back then, was the size of a Space Marine, which would now grant huge advantages due to being so much smaller) or Gorka Morka Trukks (which are less than half the size of modern versions). If an army is made predominantly of Rogue Trader era minis (or any era) and is clearly going for a theme, then exceptions will be made. If it appears to a judge that the player is in fact modeling for advantage, then action will be taken.
2.) Increasing or decreasing the size of models to gain an advantage in gaining or granting cover. Custom Battle Wagons often fall into this category.
3.) Altering a model to increase the range of a model or to benefit your LOS.
Terrain

Terrain will be prearranged and laid out by the TO’s prior to the event. We will not be using terrain placement rules per the book as it is too time restrictive. If you come to a table and feel that it is not sufficiently or fairly arranged, or that it may have been moved by the previous players, alert a TO who will arrange the terrain appropriately.
Mysterious Terrain: Will not be used.

Fortifications: If any fortifications are being used, they will be placed prior to army deployment by both players, after they have determined deployment zones. The player that chose their deployment zone first, places his Fortification first. Scratch-built fortifications will be allowed so long as they are closely the same size and shape of what they are meant to represent. If you are unsure if your fortification will be OK, ask first to avoid disappointment.

Hills: All hills are open terrain, granting cover via LOS blocking/interference as normal.

Barriers: All barriers grant cover per the book and are not considered to be Aegis Defense lines unless they were purchased and placed by a player.

Buildings/ruins: All buildings and ruins are assumed to have a ladder or other means for moving up and down. Rules in the Rule Book will be used for Ruins and Buildings.

Rock Towers, Crates, and Can Towers: Are impassible and block LOS completely (even if there are actual gaps in the terrain pieces).

All other terrain functions as outlined in the book.
What to Bring
• Your Army
• Tape Measure, Dice, Game Aids, etc.
• 3 Objective Markers on 25mm bases, 2 Objective Markers on 40mm bases.
• 9 Typed Copies of your army list. Be sure to include write how many Kill Points each of your units is worth on your list for ease of reference.
• All pertinent rules for your army. Codecis, White Dwarf Articles, Foregworld Rules, etc.
• If you are using a counts as army, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PLAYER HANDOUT FOR YOUR OPPONENT IDENTIFYING WHAT EACH UNIT IN YOUR ARMY IS, NO EXCEPTIONS!! You don’t need to have one for every player, just one for the judges, and one to show each opponent.
• A rocking pair of Jean Shorts. Chicks dig em.

Since youre removing the modified kill points is it still necessary to write how many kill points a unit is worth on your army list? Other than that the rules look really good and I look forward to playing with them at Duel Con.

I like your stance on old models. As an ork player who owns 8 gorka trukks and 3 3rd edition oversized BW and realize they are unreasonable for competitive play, I am always annoyed when my ork brothers are on the other side of the room screaming "my models are legal, I deserve an advantage!"

I have also been disturbed by the totally unreasonable 'ally proxies' out there being called conversions or 'counts as'. It is good to have that stuff have real standards.

I don't see a date for your tournament

When is it? Also, must we submit the lists earlier?
I live in Romania but I will be going in Florida for a month and I was wondering if you accept "outside" players

Also do you have a site where I can see tournament news?

In ETC(I also participated) all lists where submitted at least 1 month before the tournament and were public. is this the case?

@Yodisisray

No sir, no need. Sorry for the change, but with 6th coming out so recently we have been play testing at an insane pace and now we feel comfortable with it.

@Nklesch

Yeah, we want to allow people freedom but we don't want anyone to have an unfair advantage, either.

@Happygrunt

Haha, yes, Grimgob has it!

@Widowsbane

Hahahaha, that was out of control, no more shots for every kill point ever again!

@djphranq

Cod pieces are optional, we leave that to the individual!

@USA

These are the tournament Guidlines for all of our events, not any specifically. Are next event is Comikaze in September in LA and yes, you would be welcome.

If you're going to Florida, check out Beakycon, BBF is putting it on and it looks awesome!

Good stuff, Reece!

Some notes and questions:

• Fortifications will be allowed, but not Fortresses of Redemption or Skyshield Landing Pads as they are physically too large and require too much modification to the terrain on the table to be practical for a tournament. We may alter this in time, but for now we are restricting those two pieces of terrain.

This bit probably was intended to be removed, based on other parts of your post.

1. Place Seize Ground Objectives. Players roll off, player rolling highest places first objective. One objective always goes in the center of the board. These objectives must be outside of either deployment zone and must be 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective.

A. How can they be placed outside of deployment zones, when you don't actually know where the deployment zones are yet (at least for Vanguard)?
B. Since you're changing the order of operations from the book and having the seize ground objectives be placed before choice of deployment zone, why are you bothering to forbid them being placed in a DZ anyway? If you're using the old-style order (objectives placed before you know where you're deploying), then the issue's already mitigated.

4. Roll for First Turn. The player rolling highest chooses their deployment zone and deploys their Emperor’s Will objective. This objective must be 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective. The player going second does the same.

Maybe this is a little bit pedantic, but do they have to be exactly 6" from an edge and 12" from a seize ground objective? Or do you mean "more than/at least"?

5. Place Fortifications if any are present. The player that won the first turn roll off places theirs first. If a large Fortification (Bastion, Skyshield, or Fortress of Redemption) is placed over a piece of terrain, remove the piece of terrain and replace it with the Fortification.

Do they have to be placed at least 3" away from other terrain features (beside the one possibly being removed, of course)? Normally in the rulebook there's a min 3" spacing between fortifications and other terrain.

In general tournaments in the US accept players from anywhere, and are very happy to see new players, especially folks traveling from out of state or out of the country.

Smaller, one-day tournaments normally do not require lists to be submitted in advance. Larger Grand Tournaments* sometimes do and sometimes do not require submission of lists in advance. If they don't ask for submission in advance they usually check them during the event, and may penalize players during the event if an illegal list is found. Lists are not normally made public beforehand.

It's a good looking set of rules . However I did notice one contradiction regarding the Fortress of Redemption and Skyshield in the rules. At the top you say that they are both in but down in the "Allowed Armies" section you say they are not allowed because they are too big. I was just wondering which is the correct rulling.

As someone who has run countless tournaments I have to say I do disagree with the whole Gorkamorkka truck thing. For a long period of time this was the only model avalabial and so a lot of older ork players have them. Some people don't like the style of the current truck and don't want to replace perfectly good models with them. What happens when people want to use the older rhinos in their armies? From the side of a more casual player/collector who wants to play with his toys you are telling him that he is not welcome because he does not want to buy more stuff. I do understand that some of the people do try to gain unfair advantage but I have always prefered to just let those people weed themselves out of the equation.

With your rhino example, i would say as long as the types aren't mixed, I'm cool with it, my old SoB army ran 6 rhinos, 3 immolators, and 2 exorcists, all made from the old style rhinos. If i ended up replacing models, I'd feel that I would have to replace them all to keep things kosher size wise.

Yes there can be advantages, but if the entire army is in one style, just let it go.

The issue is the size advantage between old rhino and new rhino is negligible. Also... They can play as if they were the size of the new rhino when needed.

The problem is gorka trukks are way too different in size for it to be reasonable and it is close to impossible to fairly abstract the size for gameplay. They can still use their trukks... Just as buggies. No one is entitled to never having to update a model ever. Gorka trukks are game breaking and while you can make due in casual play, it is unfair in a competitive environment. Sometimes models get repurposed as they no longer fit the role they did 15 years ago.

@Mannahnin and Zathras

Thanks! You guys caught a few things i missed, that is exactly what I wanted feedback for, apart from general opinions of course.

Yes, all Fortifications are in. Since the tables will be preset with terrain, and we have a good coverage of the table, we wanted to simplify it and simply say that you replace a piece with the Fortification to try and keep the terrain coverage as close to the template we have as possible.

As for placing the Crusade objectives before deployment zones, I honestly hadn't thought of how that would interact with Vanguard Strike, but that is correct, you wouldn't know where to place them until after deployment zones are determined. I will adjust it, thanks!

And yes, I meant more than 6"/12"m thanks again!

@vhwolf

Trust me, the last thing we want to do is exclude anyone. But, those old trukks are like the old Avavtar. They are WAY smaller than the modern versions. They grant an unfair advantage (IMO). I can see the argument the other way, but most of the casual hobbyist player I know upgunned to the much nicer looking modern Trukk. The only folks that I know personally that still use the old Trukks as Trukks do so for the competitive advantage they gain. That shapes our perspective.

Is this going to afffect those of us who are using the OOP Necron Wraiths and the Puppetswar Cyber Arthorpods instead of the newer plastic kits? I have 3 of the OOP Wraiths and 9 of the Cyber Arthropods and don't want to relpace them with the GW kits I don't like the look of (too tall for the base they're on and the Whip Coils look like they'll snap at the slightest bump or fall) and, due to a limited budget, can't afford to spend the $180 to replace them. The metal Wraiths and the Cyber Arthropods are less bulky and slightly shorter than the newer models but not enough to provide a big advantage IMO. The question I have is will the old Wraith/Cyber Arthropod models be prohibited from usage in tournament using these rules?

@reecius I know a few people myself included who do not like the newer truck models and have not replaced their older ones for that reason not to mention in my case 11 trucks would cost a bunch of money. Just because you only personally know people who will try to gain unfair advantage doesn't mean that everyone is the same. The Avatar is a trickier item and the only one that I would agree with your stance on because it is clearly not a monstorus creature. I also have a Golden Daemon level Hive Tyrant that I like to use sometimes because it is beautiful, however it is a 2nd edition model so much smaller than the current one. Should I not be allowed to use this?

I am just trying to point out that it is not as cut and dry as people modeling for advantage, some people really do like different things for different reasons.

@Zatharas I am glad you asked this question as I have 6 metal wraiths(love the models) and 3 metal tomb spiders ) in my Necron collection should I have to replace them with models I don't really like.

I totally understand the argument and it is one of those things that, like comp, divides people.

I was just using that anecdote to prove a point too, I of course know that not everyone uses certain models for a negative purpose.

Unfortunately, we have to make a ruling one way or the other and on issues like this, we're going to step on some folks' toes while making others happy.

Our goal, first and last, is to keep things fair and fun as much as possible.

The old Hive Tyrant is fine for the most part. The old Trukks though, are literally half the size in height (if not even smaller), shorter and narrower than the old Trukks. They are so much smaller than it really just isn't fair at all.

If you were to put some bigger tires on them, or to bulk them up in some way, we would be fine with it, but those are just too much of a difference to be OK in our opinions for a competitive tournament. You are free to disagree of course, but that is our stance. And honestly, there are very few models we feel that way about. We want our events to be inclusive. But what is convenient and fun for one player at the expense of all of their opponents' fun is a net loss in our opinions and we choose to intervene.

@Zathras

We don't care unless the models are significantly different in size. When that happens, it can cause an unfair advantage that will make the game less fun for other players, which we can't allow.

So long as your models are reasonably close, it's all good. We encourage alternative models, and creative conversions, that is half the fun of the game!

The specific models you mentioned should be fine, no worries.

I favor the stance that Frontline is taking on things like the 'trukk'. If it were exhibition/casual type games, then older models ought to be okay... But for tournament play I can understand trying to hold to a certain standard.

I have another question. Is it ok to model for a disadvantage? I'm planning on putting my Tomb Spyders on 3" (76mm) bases as if they are walking on the ground instead of on the flight stand that is provided with the kit. The reason I'm doing this is because the Spyder will not stay on the flight stand without gluing it, which is something I refuse to do. I also think they'll look pretty cool done like that. The plan is that when I play with the Spyder(s) I will be measuring all distances from the Spyder model itself and not the base edge for movement, charges and Scarab generation. However all incoming effects from my opponent, such as shooting and assaults, I will be using edge of base to edge of base to resolve this. The reason for the 3" base is the Spyder doesn't fit on a 60mm base and to have 70mm bases cut by Tap Plastics would have cost me $5.50 a piece as a special order. The 3" bases were pre-cut and cost $1.25 each and a bargain compaired to the 70mm ones.

@Djphranq

Thanks for the support! Our goal is fairness, and to that end we do sometimes have to make calls that people don't like, so it's good to hear the supporters and not just the detractors. Thanks!

@Zathras

Honestly, if it seems fair, don't sweat it. We don't go around with a micrometer measuring every model to make sure it's just right.

We just want to make sure things are as fair as possible and you sound like a fair minded individual so I am sure your instincts will guide you just fine. If it feels fair, it probably is.

The only time you should worry is if something is pretty far out of the norm like putting a 25mm model with an AOE effect on a 60mm base, using the Old Avatar (he's only 25mm tall!), etc. Minor changes are no big deal.

For example, I put all of my character models on 40mm bases because I like the way it looks and it gives me more modeling opportunities. Usually this is a disadvantage to me, and I have never, ever had anyone say anything about it even at the finals of Adepticon, etc.

The rule of cool usually wins out. There is a very short list of things that will make us take action.

People can build a rocky outcropping display base for the gorkatrukks or miniavatar which then makes the model have a similar footprint and profile. We are talking maybe 10$ of clay and minimal painting effort and your model can even be removable so it is only 'set' on the outcropping for competative play.

If someone is really all about the legacy models, then doing some minimal effort to make them legal and respect opponents seems like a no brainer. And when someone resists making display bases to cancel out the differences, then they seem like someone who is doing it for an advantage and the rule applies to them.

Most of the people I know who use old trucks have done work to make them bigger and each one unique. However someone reading the rules would figure he just cant play. That is why I was bringing it up.
