Subject: 2k Drop Pod Blood Angels List for Fun

Was talking to a friend to day and we were spit balling a 100% drop pod list for Blood Angels and this is what I came up with.
HQ:
(2x) Stock Librarian with Blood Lance and Smite (100pts)
Elites:
(3x) Sanguinary Priests, 2 with plasma pistols, 1 with melta bombs (had a few spare points) (195pts)
(2x) Furrioso Librarian Dreadnoughts in Drop Pods (420 pts)
Troops:
(4x) 10 Man Assault Squads in Drop Pods, 2 plasma guns in each, Sgt with duel Plasma pistols (gunslinger) (1184 pts)
(1x) 8 Man Assault Squad, 1x Flamer and Sgt with Storm Shield
The idea: Drop Half your army first turn and slag everything you can, Follow up strikes as forces become available.
This army boasts 7 drop pods, which means you get to drop 4 on turn one, and can choose the best options for the situation at hand. Each assault squad carries 2 plasma guns, 2 plasma pistols, and can support both a librarian and sanguinary priest to provide both psyker protection / offense and Feel no Pain for the plasma boys (12 models per pod). Including Smite, you will get 10 Ap 2 shots per squad followed by 7 bolt pistol shots. This should seriously put the hurt on any close MEQ units and will thin the ranks of any horde units. The Dreads will pack a wallop with the psychic powers, and should be very high priority for enemy shooting but should serve to pop a tank or two with the lance. The 5th squad of assault marines with the shielded sergeant is simply meant to drop and go to ground on an objective later in the game. If a priest is allocated to them they can hide behind the pod, or move into its crater after destruction, which should give them cover and make them decently hard to remove, especially in the late game.
The army is a bit of a one trick pony, and may have trouble with Armor 14, but considering the nerf tanks are generally perceived to have received this edition, it is unlikely that you will be running into too many of these and the list does contain 4 possible blood lances (str 10) and a back up melta bomb. Its all about an overwhelming tide of red power armor and plasma death in the enemy's rear echelon first turn.
This will give you a complete Drop Pod army, which means if you go second you have nothing on the board for your opponent to shoot at, most likely forcing him to give you first go so as not to lose a turn. Since Drop Pod units do not count toword your reserve component, and all units are embarked in drop pods, you should be fine. Plus, having no units on the board for your opponents turn is not an issue as you do not forfeit until you have no models on the board at the end of the game turn, which includes both player turns.
I'm certainly not saying this list is competative, but it might be a laugh if your opponent lets you run it (I'm assuming proxies, cause I doubt anyone would serious collect this force).
What do you guys think?

Wow, 30 points for two plasma pistols is a lot.
Rest doesn't seem too bad, and is something different.

Hi I was actually thinking of making a list pretty similar to this one in idea, but with more of a focus on msu and dreadnoughts. I forget the exact list I was thinking of but it was something like this:
2 Librarian termies w/ storm shields
2 honor guards with 4 plasma guns each
2 drop pods for those guys
3 furiosos w/ heavy flamers, magna grapples, and that other thing that they can take that fires templates instead of 1 blood fist.
3 drop pods
4 5 man assault squads w/ meltaguns and combo-meltas
4 drop pods
10 man death company with some stuff
drop pod
death company dreadnought with heavy flamer
drop pod
or something like that if I have extra points ill buff the 5 man squads into 10 man one at a time if I'm over ill drop some death company... so yea

Thanks Mercer, that's exactly what we were shooting for, something fun and different, just to spice up a few battles and stretch our imaginations
To Rivers64: Oooh, totally forgot about blood angels honor guard, and they pack their own sanguinary priest too boot! However, don't you need to take one captain per squad to unlock them, or do the Librarians count for this? Plus, I'd rather just keep the Libys cheap and plentiful but it would be interesting to try both load outs
I also worry a bit about only having 20 3+ save bodies in the troops category, though if you hold the assaults for the second wave they might survive with the enemy thinned out by the heavy hitting first wave.
Thanks for the responses
oops, just noted I missed the 10 man death co, but can they hold objectives in this edition?

The DC can not hold objectives but they are decent enough at falling in drop pods. You want inf. pistols and bolters.
Try sternguard with combimeltas and heavy flamers and honour guard with plasma guns, these will make an impact and be FNP infantry which are hard to shift.
BA dreads have the issue that they really want assault, at least the non heavies do. They are still good.
Any ICs in drop pods may as well get terminator armour.
Given the short range nature and all that I would consider doing drop pods with an ADL and good amount of shooting.
I am thinking 3 dev. squads and tactical squad combat squaded.
Anyway you should look at jawaballs. He runs a drop pod list. This worked well when no one was ready for it.
Currently I feel drop pod lists are also really unexpected. You can cause real problems for flying lists as they attempt to not get tabled.
In some ways that should be your aim to at least table one player first turn.

Wow I have to tell you guys how much I love complete drop pod lists, I think they work great.
I wanted to point out though that although a DC may not be able to capture an objective, I'm pretty sure DC dreadnoughts can seeing as they are a troop choice.
I'd love to see someone play any of the lists above.

List looks good, would be fun to play I imagine.
To Plague-Master. I am pretty certain DC dreads can as they have Rage instead of Black Rage. All drop pod DC Dread list up next?

Liking this list a lot, I used to run Drop Pod Vanilla marines and I'm trying to find an option that will allow me to use Flesh tearers aggressively, this could work!

Wait correct me if I'm wrong but in 6th aren't vehicles never counted as scoring units, so wouldn't that include dreads?

The rules haven't changed from 5th.
DC dreads are vehicles so do not score but now they can not even deny objectives.
DC can't score but can deny.

Very well thought out list. It looks a bit wonky, but your explanation for each and every unit really provides great insight. The list looks quite challenging and quite fun to play with and against. Thanks for posting something a bit different and informative.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |
