Hey all, I've been looking for a good turn based strategy game for a while. Kind of like a total war game, with homeworld-ish battles...

Can anyone suggest something like that? I've had my eyes on a game called Endless space as well as Sword of the stars. Can you guys give your thoughts on those as well as suggest some others if you can?

Cheers!

Galactic Civilizations, Master of Orion. Endless Space is cool, but fairly indy and I am personally holding off on playing it anymore until they get the modding situation ironed out.

I quite liked Endless Space, its a good example of the genre. I havn't played Sword of the Stars although I have heard mixed things about it.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Galactic Civilisationas and Sword of the Stars are both polar opposites, in a good way.

Galactiv Cililisations has complexity and planning and is an upgradec Master of Orion. Good game system with a lot of versatility. The only thing it lacks is tactical space combat.

Sword of the Stars has cut down infrastructure management. In fact planetary development, economy and research are cut down to two sliders. However this is for simplicity, not dumbing down. The game entirely focuses on tactical combat, you buld your ships form fleet and fight 3d battles with them.

Each game scratches where the other itches. I recommend both.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

If were talking great space combat games, nothing has come close to homeworld 1/2 yet... considering how old they are this is mad.

As much as I liked GalCiv2 (building starships in 3D was fun), MoO2 is still the king of all such games. Also, I think MoO is the only one where you actually have space battles be turn-based, too.

Well, considering Homeworld 1 and 2 are not turn based....that point is moot.

My own personal preference would be Master of Orion 2, or even Master of Orion 1. These games are the KING of 4E

Endless Space is pretty good, although I'm not a fan of the combat myself (mostly just because I'm lazy ).

Although I'll also say that Civ IV: Beyond the Sword had a great space version of the game in the mods that came with it. I forget the name, but I spent many hours on it.

The tragedy, that MoO 3 was so bad. I would pay a lot for a MoO 2 with a good MP mode and better resolution.

FTL: Faster than light is a great rts rougelike in space.

Basically you command the crew of a space ship, battle other space ships by targeting specific systems with your weapons of varying effects, and upgrade your ship.

I've only played Galactic Civilizations 2 from that franchise, but that said... on several occasions I told myself I was going to only play for two hours... and then would stop playing more than a day without sleep later. The game will eat your soul if you let it, it is simply that glorious.

That said, MoO 2 was great and still holds a special place in my heart, and MoO 3 isn't a bad game, it just calls to different players in different ways. I won't deny that MoO 2 is better in many ways, but MoO 3 is a game worth playing, at least from my perspective.

The MoO games are the best TBS space games.

I would recommend Galactic Civilizations 2, I had hours of fun (I agree that it can suck you in) with that game, I loved creating my own ships and empires.

I too love Total War games. The only space equivalent I have played has been Sword of the Stars. It was really cool, the right balance of simplicity and complexity (like Total War games). I ended up sinking hundreds of hours into the game. I never really go into SotS2 though, don't know if it was too complex or it was just too buggy when I played it (I played it when it was first released before it was fixed by patches). Going to recommend the original Sword of the Stars and its expansions. It's probably really cheap by now.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.
