I've been trying to figure out ways to handle tank centric builds with my necrons and I've started considering using a veiltek-lightningtek combo as a deepstriking anti-tank squad.

So far I've thought of two ways to make this work-

1) A court containing a Veiltek and at least one Lightningtek.
2) Having two overlords in the army and attaching a veiltek and a lightningtek to a single small unit of warriors, immortals or possibly S&B lychguard

The second option is obviously only viable in high point games and only for very specific army builds, but is far more survivable (and expensive).

The first option is the more likely of the two, but it has the issue of being extremely risky as it practically relegates them to be a 1 shot suicide squad unless they're shored up with lords and possibly more crypteks, which would make it expensive as hell.

Thoughts?

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

Uhhhh aren't be robs like... Quite good against vehicles? Glancing them to death with guass etc?

The main issue here, is that you give up the option to use crypteks are the massively OP utility units they are in favor of some anti-tank you don't really need.

hail the greater good.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

I have also been using this combo, and have found it to be effective. You can get 2 lightningteks and a veiltek for 110 points, and you have the potential to cause 5-6 glancing hits on avarage, which is more than enough to destroy the toughest of vehicles now. Most vehicles come in at more that 110 points, so even if they die the next turn, not only have they killed more than they cost, they provide a distraction that your opponent has to deal with whilst the rest of your army moves up with less being shot at it.

Gauss is only OK against vehicles, you cant rely it. Necrons still need AT units.

A court of veil-tek + 2x storm teks is great if the models can be useful when split into other units. Its great to stick the court together when you see a manticore across the table but the unit will be wasted against a lot of armies.

5 warrior + night scythe. Add 1 or 2 lightning tek blam dead tank. Tactics can be adjusted with a different royal court member joining the squad, or the squad can stay bare bones.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Actually I've found gauss to be the only at I need. Squad of warriors with one destruction tek in a ghost ark kills whatever it wants, whenever it wants. Split up your destruction teks and put one with each squad of troopers you're taking: their glancing combined with the popping power of the tek will knock out even the toughest, most expensive tanks. I sometimes also take a slow-build scarab farm (3 scarabs and a psy defense spyder) for that late game killitness or pesky assault dreadnought, but just because it's relatively low points for the ol' crons.

Also, a fun scythe will take care of all your massed transport woes.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Sure, if you have a warrior centric army and have them all focus fire for a shooting phase or two...

A Leman Russ would take on average 36 gauss shots to take out, and assuming you haven't managed to get it into RF range that means that you need to dedicate almost 2 full warrior bricks to the task of taking it out in order to manage it in a single turn.

That's 468 points of warriors focusing fire on a 150 point tank, and it's going to be borderline impossible to get them all into their 24" range unless the 72" ranged Russ deigns to close in.

Among the Necron's decent ranged AT units Destructeks are borderline useless against AV14, and Heavy destroyers, Gauss Triarc Stalkers and Doomsday Arks are overpriced and would only penetrate on a 6.

Aside from gauss spam the only real AT option at the 24" range is the Monolith's S8 Ordnance 1 pie plate Particle Whip.

Closing in to 12" you can finally make use 2D6 penetration roll of the Triarc Stalker's S8 two shot melta Heat Rays, but good luck getting one that close to the Leman Russ and its 72" S8 Ordnance Battle Cannon.

If you don't want to go for the Necron's melee AT options (which are, admittedly, rather awesome at it) then other than the above your only options are the Doomscythe's Death Ray and the Lightningtek's 12" Assault 4 haywire Voltric Staff.

Doomscythes are awesome, but being flyers you can't use them on turn 1 and on most tables they run the very real risk of zooming off the battlefield or out of range.

The best State-Texas

A Stormtek, and a group of 10 warriors should be able to take out just about any tank you throw them at. Instead of opting for the Veiltek, you could load them up in a Nightscythe, and drop them off turn two. The NIghtscythe is also pretty effective anti-tank, thanks to the removal of the -1 from the chart for AP-, and with the advent of Hullpoints.

I really haven't been using courts in a while, and have switched to a double destroyer lords. I tend to find, that between All the Tesla Destructors, and the Doom scythes that I bring to the board, I don't have a lot of trouble taking out tanks.

I agree, in that you can't really rely on the Gauss rule alone, to take out tanks. You really need a bit more than that.
