Well I'm not a Tyranid player so I can't really suggest anything.

But the Trygon Prime is actually 240 not 250.

AS a tyranid player

6th edition has dropped and close combat got a .. nerf/buff... harder to get into but stuff works better now.
genes got a serious hack
swarmlord is super over priced im sorry but he really is I have run him I have proxied him I have looked at his over all and im sorry to say he is... not worth the cost
to make him survivable at best, he needs at least 2 guards, now base cost is 400.. for 100 more you can field 2 tougher tyrants who are still amazing in melee and can.. shoot.

sorry to say hes not worth it, use him and see for yourself sometimes he does well sometimes he does horrible.. but for a 280 (400) point model... in the end, he better be HARD to kill (which hes not) be a good universal tool (which he is not) for 400 points i better have a unit that the enmy just runs from rather than easily kills

your best bet are tyrants for HQ.

heres a few quick tips, ive played against many armies, so this is based off of a good vs all or most not just one or two
1. field long ranged shooty (with the drop of 6th... with better shooting, gun lines and aegis defense lines, new wound allocation) YOU NEED RANGE
-- tyranofex... our only str 10 range gun, not a good ap so its strictly anti vehicle. EVERY other option you give him make ant infantry and walk him forward, hes a tough kill
-- Zoans in a spod, need that long range? how about short range where i need it with a near guaranteed vehicle pop? zoans are the answer
-- hive guard spam , might not be long range, but good guns, good shooters and lots of them plus a little harder to kill
2. basic gaunts are useless gaunts
-devourers on termagaunts overpowered
-toxin sacs on hormagaunts.. without them... they are just kill fodder, with rage getting a buff they are needed as more than kill fodder
3. no gimicks... some say our codex is weak.. yes because there are very gimmicky models... rely on statistics not "oh man that looks cool and MIGHT work well"
-Swarmlord, old one eye, flyrants.... expensive. not as useful as their points depict
- an armored tyrant with a good gun is 230-235 points.... and with the ranged gun, the close combat godness.. swarmlord is a wast of 50-55(plus 60-65 per guard he NEEDS)
- like i said earlier... genestealers.. i dont like the unit in all honesty... but to say they werent great in 5th id be a liar... in 6th they got a face punch. they are now listed under "gimmick"

adrenals on monstrous creatures no longer needed (nore ever really were)since biomancy and worst case scenario smash dropped.. save 10 points remove the adrenals and as i RECENTLY as in like last week learned toxin sacs are nice for mcs IF you have the spare points.. allows reroll for wounds if your str is equal, or better and poisons on a 4+ unless a lower number would wound instead so a trygon still wounds most on a 2+ AND gets to re roll failed wounds.

Anything will die if you can stab it enough.

I like a lot of what the above player has stated. Trygons with TS are great. I have rolled plenty of ones in my day to know 10 pts is worth it to lock in more wounds. Especially if you are using smash to kill tough enemies.

Personally I like Flyrants. Two is obviously better but I don't mind just one. Lots of pts though. Basic gaunts are not useless gaunts. Basic termagaunts with an AG TS Tervigon close by are very nice.

I love me my hive Guard. Always have and always will. Taking away that cover save is so nice.

I don't like the tyranofex. Tried one then tried two. When they hit it's great but with weak BS and heavy pts cost I found them unappealing.

My advice for going to 2000pts and not changing your list too much is add more gargoyles. Have 20 with a flyrant with OA. Love that combo. If you can get some nice Biomancy powers for your flyrant like Iron Arm you will be happy with the unit.

I'd also grab a second trygon with TS. no prime is needed. They work best in pairs anyways.
