Subject: Finecast and thin components

Human Auxiliary to the Empire

Hi there
I would quite like to add The Changeling to a unit of Horrors I'm working on.
However, I'm a bit new to finecast (though I've heard all of the stories ) and when I looked at the model in the shop yesterday his (very thin) staff was twisted and bent out of shape. How easy is this to rectify? I know you can use hot water to soften the resin so that it bends, but I've read on here that thin parts can break easily.
Advice before purchase would be appreciated
Cheers
Bufo

Ive also read hot water does the trick. Youll have to make sure the resin is fairly soft before attempting to bend it again. And if it breaks, well, thats what super glue is for

Dive in and bite the bullett then, eh?
Oh well, guess I'll give it a go. Not buying the one I saw yesterday though, will shop around and find one that isn't quite so warped.

How easy it is depends on how it got bent.
Finecast (like all resins) softens when warm and becomes easy to bend. Cold temperatures cause it to harden again. Finecast is just more temperature sensitive than a lot of resins.
You'll find the bend may have occurred in a couple of ways; Firstly simply by pressure on the part. This is easy to fix; and notably simply warming the part will cause it to straighten back to the correct position. Very common with Forgeworld resin, especially the long bits like cabling for titans.
The other way is by being bent when being pulled from the mould if the resin wasn't fully cured. This is an alarmingly common occurence, and happens because GW's production department is under very tight time constraints. The resin then cures in the deformed position. This gives the part 'memory', and when warmed (even after resetting) it will tend to shift back towards that position. Many heating / cooling processes may be needed. Sometimes if the bend is very severe it may not straighten at all, or may need a metal core adding.
Unfortunately, there's no really easy way to tell the difference; one give away tends to be that the whole sprue is 'bent' in one particular direction - there was a picture posted a while back of some Tau Broadside suit rail cannons which illustrated this quite well.

This is what makes me so afraid to invest in the finecasts.. I've seen the nightmares of the Broadsides first hand.
Also doesn't help with June's price raises that they cost a freaking fortune.. you'd think abandoning metal would DROP the price.

Cheers Winterdyne, I'll looks for these clues when buying the model.
It's a shame they get so warped. In principle The Changeling is one of my favourite sculpts, but of the final products I've seen, finecast don't do it justice

It's a godawful production method. There are a number of recasting firms (in China mostly) that are recasting fixed up Finecast models into metal. It's a sad state of affairs when the quality you get from an illegal bootleg is better than the original.

And you pay 4x as much for the non-bootlegs lol

As a case in point, I estimate the fixes needed on a squad of 3 Finecast Mega-Armoured Orks to run to around £60 worth of work, before I can even prime them.
*shrug* People buy this gak. I've jumped ship to Sedition Wars. And I'm really tempted to throw a couple hundred bucks in Reaper's direction too.
