Tried to search for this and couldn't find. Apologize if already posted.

This question has come up several times in playing throughout the past month or so.

The question is: While Night Fight rules are in effect, do you determine if a Unit has Stealth/Shrouding based on distance from the firing model or from the center of the blast marker?

Example: Your opponent decides to shoot you with his Manticore. Night Fight rules are in effect. You are 25 inches away from the Manticore. Do you get receive the Shrouded special rule from the shot even though it's a barrage weapon?

Relevant Rules I know of:

Pg. 124 Night Fight picking a target:

"While the Night Fighting rules are in effect, the distance to a target unit becomes very important - the darkness makes it very difficult to acquire distant targets. The shooting unit cannot pick a target more than 36" away - such units are completely hidden in the darkness. Units betweer:'24" and 35" inches away are treated as having the Shrouded special rule. Units betwee n 12" and up to 24" away are instead treated as having the Stealth special rule. Units less than 12" away can be shot at normally. If a shooting attack scatters, the distance from the firing unit to the original target is used to determine what effect Night Fighting has. This means that a unit that is over 35" away can still potentially be hit."

Pg. 34 Barrage Rules Second Bullet
"To determine whether a unit wounded by a Barrage weapon is allowed a cover save, and when determining allocation, always assume the shot is coming from the centre of the blast marker, instead of from the firing model. Hits against vehicles are always resolved against their side armor."

The Argument Points:

- Night Fight rules are used to determine if your unit is granted Shrouding or Stealth NOT a direct cover save.

- The Barrage Rules read that you measure from the center of the blast to determine cover saves, but do not mention that you do this to determine Shrouded/Stealth status while Night Fighting. (It explicitly lists 2 scenarios that you measure from the center for, "allowed a cover save" and 'determining allocation".

- Implicitly, receiving Shrouding or Stealth is receiving a cover save. it's an indirect path, but Shrouding/Stealth do grant cover saves. Does the second bullet point for 'determining cover saves' then also imply that you don't get Shrouded or Stealth? Or are they not related, and thus you use Night Fight to determine a Shrouded/Stealth status which thereby grants you cover from the blast?

Similar Arguments:

- Defensive grenades and 8 inches away from the firing unit. (Do you get stealth or not?)

Thanks for help!

Yes, distance from the shooter to the target is what determines whether you are stealth or shrouded.

The Barrage rule determines the cover save after the shot hit, which will always take into effect the shrouded or stealth rule. (and possibly area terrain your in...etc)
