With the Space Marines are all sergeants veterans or are some of them just higher ranking space marines?

I was thinking about a paint scheme for my army and was wondering if I should paint the Sergeants as Veterans (I was going to give them red helmets).

Sergeants are superior to a standard tactical marine.

Veteran Sergeants are superior sergeants with veteran status. They lead squads of Veterans.

Red helmets you say? Ultramarines or Imperial fists?

If Ultra, sergeants have red helmets. Veterans have white helmets. Veteran Sergeants have white/red helmets.

Ultramarine.

Since there are sergeants that aren't necessarily Veterans I think I'll paint them as that with Red helmets.

From my understanding, Sergeants are indeed Veterans, or at least very old soldiers, leading from experience and by example.
