it seems to be fairly generally accepted that if a transport vehicle is stunned, the passengers, whether they are in the vehicle or out of it, cannot shoot in their next shooting phase. How does this interact with overwatch?

Situation at a tournament today had a chimera being stunned and then subsequently destroyed. The passengers passed their pinning test and then prepared to fire overwatch. We all agreed that they couldn't shoot NEXT turn in their shooting phase, but a RAW reading seemed to indicate that overwatch shooting was fine. Does this make sense? Better yet, is it correct

So, either I'm completely out to lunch and missed something obvious, or everyone else who reads this is also confused by these interactions?

Here's hoping for a comprehensive FAQ soon.

As long as you didn't perform an Emergency Disembarkation, yes, you can overwatch. Even if you were to take your pinning test and fail, you may still overwatch.

I'm not sure what this has to do with emergency disembarkation. If a unit is in a vehicle that is stunned, they cannot fire next turn. Period.

Oh, I'm sorry, I completely missed the target there...

Crew Stunned indicates that they may not shoot in their subsequent shooting phase but are otherwise unaffected. You do not overwatch in your shooting phase, so you are unaffected by Crew Stunned for this purpose.

Overwatch is resolved as a normal shooting attack and uses all the normal rules and restrictions, just in a different phase (p21).
If you're unable to preform a normal shooting attack, you're unable to Overwatch.

Overwatch occurs in the Assault phase, just before the FIght Sub-phase. They can still fire Overwatch even if they were unable to shoot in that turn due to the Stunned result in the previous turn.

The key words you used are "just in a different phase." Crew Stunned reads: "Passengers cannot shoot in their next Shooting phase, but are otherwise unaffected." If they are not in their Shooting Phase, they are unaffected.

Yeah, that's my reading too, but that seems very peculiar. I was hoping I'd missed something. This leads to the odd situation, where if you stun the vehicle the passengers cannot fire on their turn, but can shoot you if you charge them (say it's open topped). That doesn't seem to add up.

I think the FAQ will really need to addres what is meant by 'overwatch is conducted as another shooting phase'. Otherwise, I see this applying to other rules as well. Let's say, Dire Avengers Bladestorm? That doesn't seem right. (off the cuff, I bladestorm, then when you charge me I overwatch, even though I couldn't shoot in my next shooting phase?)

Edit - Thanks for the input btw!

If you're unable to preform a normal shooting attack, you're unable to Overwatch.

If you're unable to cite a rule saying that, you're incorrect.

And you will be unable to cite that because it doesn't exist.

So, I'll have to check the wording, but you'd be ok with Dire Avengers bladestorming you in the face, and then waiting for you to charge them and bladestorming again, because it's not their next shooting phase (which they cannot fire in)?

That's how I roll. Haven't heard any complaints yet.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Since that's what he rules say...

As much as it makes no sense to me the rules are pretty unambiguous on this...
