Ok, so in a game tonight I had a squad of plaguebearers led by a herald of Nurgle with Breath of Chaos charged by a CSM daemon prince. I took an overwatch shot at him with Breath of Chaos before he charged, rolling D3 hits at 4+ to wound. My friend made the argument I shouldn't get D3 hits because it essentially allowed more hits than normal against a single model. We couldn't find anything specific to refute the D3 hits as it states it is D3 against the unit (regardless of if it is a single model unit from what I can tell). I rolled a 1 so we just kept playing since it didn't make a difference in that instance, but my friends were saying that going forward in games overwatch template shots should not get D3 against a single unit, because it's more hits than they could get in a normal shooting phase.

Am I missing anything here, or is this just a unique scenario where using Breath of Chaos in overwatch against a monstrous creature can be insanely powerful? I mean, I could have potentially caused three 4+ wounds to a monstrous creature while being charged where I could only count on a single wound in any other situation, so I understand the argument. I realize this benefits me greatly with Breath Heralds, and I don't want to game the rules for an unfair advantage, but I can't help but think the rules are pretty clear that it is D3 shots for flamer weapons, regardless of it is a single model units, or a 20 model unit.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

The rules are clear.

D3 hits Per Flame template weapon.

the model count in the charging unit does not matter.

It is definitely D3 hits, whether you are charged by a single model or a squad. Not a major problem with normal flamers, just OP Chaos ones

Your friend is probably running into an aspect of 6th edition that they aren't particularly fond of or what not; but the rule is quite clear in this case and DeathReaper and everyone else that says the d3 hits vs a 1 model unit are legitimate have the right of it.

I'd suggest politely telling your friend that you prefer not to house-rule Overwatch as it applies to templates (and/or that he or she may want to find and show you where in the 6th ed book it states that a unit cannot take more hits from overwatch than the number of models in it before you'll agree to using that rule).

Edit: Overwatch is also lots of fun with Grey Knights: they get some nice flame templates to lay down, especially with the Dreadknight incinerator upgrade.
