Hi dakka, looking for advice on my first 40k army of Space Marine bikes. My local GW store encourages players to avoid curb-stomping and is geared towards friendlier games. Being a new player - I am interested in a steep learning curve with such a low model count, but would still like to provide a challenge for my future opponents as I better learn the game. I could be accused of being unimaginative with my list but I think I'd like to start simple and then go from there.

I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts and (especially) criticism as my aim is to have fun and hopefully provide a similar experience for my opponent - I'd like to avoid getting tabled in first turn if I can help it!

Are those stock storm talons? I'd give them some sort of upgrades, the basic HBs don't fit it's role very well. Not sure where you'd get the points though. You might want to drop down to one and get a land speeder or two with the points left over.

Overall looks good though.

Thanks Nevelon, I am annoyed with the Stormtalons - I'd prefer to give them the Typhoon MLs - they only way I could see to do this easily (and cheaply) is to remove one plasma squad, buff the melta squad up to full (8 bikes + attack bike) for combat squad tank-hunting. This gives me 40 points which I allocated to the sergeants with a Power weapon each and melta bombs. Does this look a little more balanced?

If you aren't going to take a special weapon with the Attack bikes in the Plasma Bike Squads, switch out the Attack bikes for regular ones and use the extra points to do something like...

1) Upgrade your StormTalons
2) Get a Chapter Master instead of a Captain (Orbital bombardment = good)
3) Combi-plasma guns on your Sergents

Or drop the Artificer armor from you HQ and do 2 and 3

You should do well with T5 3+ troops. Good luck

Chapter master does not make bikers troops.
Seriously rethink your relic blade on the captain. The new rules do not lend well for AP3 in melee. Go with a powerfist or thunderhammer, otherwise he will struggle to deal with terminators.

Also, I would drop the powerweapon and meltabombs on your sergeants and find the extra points to get powerfists. Your bike squads generally want to avoid CC at all times, but when you do get stuck in CC, the powerfist makes a huge difference for getting away.

Artificer armour is a bargain for the captain.
Relic blade has gone down, but just make sure on your bike you assault other units. As it is, the cc they should only think about is stuff where hammer attacks have an effect or just to finish off mech.
fist+lightning claw seems to be cool armaments if you were going to change.
Meltabombs and hellfire rounds are both pretty useful.
Stormshield is always welcome.

Later on I would recommend making a command squad deathstar on bikes. they look cool as well.

To your actual list, I think you have done well. The only thing I would have probably done is go for 2 units with combat squads, 4 scoring units are better than 3. Scoring is what you want after all.

Biker lists are pretty hard to play and are not very forgiving. They are very able army, however.
Good luck and learn fast

Thank you everyone for your input - I'm thinking I'm going to have to muck around with some magnets on the captain's wargear. I think I'll interchange a Grey Knight's halberd so it can represent a Relic Blade/Power Sword/ or Lance and a Thunder Hammer so I can experiment with each load-out - see what works from game to game. I don't really intend to charge terminators - my list is trying to be mid-range shooty, instead I'd like to try only using my captain in melee against vehicles or weaker troop choices. We'll see if that actually happens!

This revised list will definitely have upgrades modeled on but not counted so as to make for easy additions or subtractions game to game.

And so -

HQ

Captain
Bike
Artificer Armour
Relic Blade/Thunder Hammer
Storm Shield
Hellfire Rounds
Melta Bombs 210

Troops

Bike Squad
1 Biker
2 Plasma Guns
Attack Bike 185

Bike Squad
5 Bikers
2 Melta Guns
Attack Bike
Multi Melta 285

Stormtalon
Typhoon ML 155

Typhoon ML 155

990 points

Captain can be armed with either Relic Blade or Thunder Hammer. And has Storm Shield, Hellfire Rounds and Melta Bombs included which can all be ignored or included for WYSIWYG and upgrades being allocated to him or elsewhere. This way I can easily run him near starkers or with lost of shiny toys.

Stuck with one minimum sized bike squad with 2 plasma guns and the Heavy Bolter on the Attack Bike for troop killing, while the full sized squad has 2 melta guns and the Multi Melta for combat squad tank-hunting. This way I have three scoring squads for a 1000 points game.

** I am a little wary of running Powerfists on the Sergeants because of the reduced initiative. I'm hoping to keep them outside of close combat. I might have to do some additional magnetizing for them here for easy future upgrading.

Finally both Stormtalons have Typhoon MLs for versatility (and to add some sort of heavy weapon to the list).

** If my list turns out to be weak on scoring, I'll remove one Stormtalon and buff the minimum bike squad to full for four scoring combat squads.

Looks good. The true test of course is to see how it plays. Good hunting out there.

Hi there. I have a great deal of successful games (4:0 win:lose on vassal with bikes ). I will say, however you run them, they ARE a steep learning curve and the second you lose your 'winning' attidude, the game starts to fall away. My victories have been victories, but narrowly (beat tau on objectives with 4 bikes left )

To your list:
Captains are a need. In your OP, you have exactly the same loadout as me. At 1000 points, you cannot afford to go super expensive with PF+LC. Dont worry about conter-terminators, this is 1k points and a terminator unit is 1 5th of the total, you'll be able to kill them with massed shooting plas. The relic blade is good because you keep your I5 - 1 higher fighting MEQ, and it's AP3, so you can deal with them effectively. Dont buy a stormshield. Points are tight enough in a 1k list, and to have your invuln save go from 4++ to 3++ is just not worth it IMO. Relic Blade, Artificer Armour and Bike - the minimal wargear for a bike captain (IMO)

Bikes dont do well in combat (unless they charge and outnumber a squad 2:1). Replace those Meltas with plasma. Longer range means enemies cant charge you after you drive up close. Plas got a boost too, so your AP2 gives +1 on the vehicle dmg chart - so it's still decent for vehicles. Attack bikes should have a MM. The attack bikes are the core of your anti-tank capabilities, you need them. I like what you have done with the full bike squads in order to combat squad. I do this is larger lists, but people seem to think its not good. I dont quite think you need it in a 1k list. 3 Min bike squads with plas and MM is good enough (imo) - add more bikes if you have left over points. On my sargents, i have Power fists, If you are looking to take out a tank and your MM whifs, you have the option to charge it and punch it to death. Of course, meltabombs do this just as good, but i have a PF to give my CC a kick. Meltabombs are a must at the very least, the CC weapon is up to you. Combi-weapons are not worth it, imo, you have 2 plas already and 1 MM, you dont need anymore.

Your stormtalons fit well with the theme, why not Skyhammer Missiles? 1 more shot, for the same cost. I would argue that you only really need 1 Stormtalon atm. Due to the lack of skyfire, 2 might be a bit overkill, but YMMV. I also found that the twin linked assault cannon's rending does the majority of the damage

If you ever want to test a list, PM me and we can sort a vassal game out. I'll be quite willing to help you with tactics etc.

And in my sig is my army list, have a peak for some inspiration

Good Luck!
