Sorry, we're about to freak out a little: it comes from seeing all of your future-dreams realized well before you thought they had a chance at reality. See, this company called Leap has a brand new toy for your computer, and it's going to change the way we interact with technology. Which we're generally in favor of.

See that little guy below? The thing in front of the computer? That new thing is called the Leap. And it's gonna make us all into genius billionaire playboy philanthropists.

The Leap is a gadget that turns eight cubic feet of space around your computer (that's just about any computer, this is not owned by Mac or Samsung or any of those companies) into a 3D interface for you to interact with your machine. Now you can pinch, grab, push and pull things on your screen as though you are reaching into the computer, instead of just swiping and tapping. Or pointing and clicking. It can recognize more delicate instruments as well, like pens and chopsticks.

In short, you are Tony Stark. Now they just have to make the holographic interface, and we'll be all set. Can we have it? Please?

You can preorder it here for $70 (which we think is nice and resonable considering how cool it will make you look), but the real question is—how long before all computers interface this way? How long before we're all using them to make our wildest 3D dreams come true?

The idea is that it takes extra effort and time to write properly, and they’d rather save the time. If you can still be understood, what’s the harm? While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

I can't see this being a better interface than keyboard and mouse. Depends what you want to do with your computer, of course. I can't see this being useful for say, compiling a financial report, or gaming, or programming.

You are still going to need a keyboard, there isn't any way of typing.

Don't think I've ever been at my computer and wished I could wave my arms around like a madman instead of clicking my mouse. Sure, it looks really cool but copy/paste, typing, clicking on small links and probally a lot other basic functions would be really difficult.

I could see this being useful if you regularly use multiple computers. For example I would be able to quickly scan through source material on one computer, while coding data on another. However, it would be more of a curiosity than any sort of necessity.

You just described every single technical innovation of the past 10 years. Ipad anyone?

Except the Ipad can actually do all the stuff everything else can do while also doing more. This thing lacks the ability to type.

I think it will be very useful with certain programs. You can do rough sketches and design mockups with the speed of your hand while saving them on the computer.

Other than game. Or type to any degree of accuracy. If you want a laptop, but don't like paying too little, then iPads sure are innovative.

There are plenty of situations in which tablets are more useful than a laptop. They aren't meant as replacement devices, they fill a separate niche which basically amounts to "Not sitting at a desk." I mean, I have two laptops and two desktops, and I use my tablet more than either laptop.

Oh, and tablets are, along with cell phones and handhelds, are pretty much the only ways to game without an internet connection these days.

I've seen plenty of people who "need" a tablet. None of them actually do.
I don't even know what that means. You've heard of games consoles? And computers? Europa Universalis III dicks all over Angry Birds. "Gaming" on a mobile device doesn't really count.

And there are plenty of games that are just installed on the computer. I mean, steam just needs an internet connection to install the game.

Most people don't need computers either, about the only reason you would is if you didn't have access to a public library. In much the way that tablets are convenience devices, so is pretty much every form of personal electronic hardware short of a phone.

Almost all of my games are served through Steam, and anything old enough to be unavailable on that service simply won't run on my present OS, at least barring products from services like GOG. What this means is that if I don't have internet access, I only own maybe 4 games I can play on a PC. Consoles I'll give you, but much like a desktop or laptop, I can't use them outside my apartment or hotel room (My laptop is of the "portable" variety).

As for the Angry Birds bit: My Galaxy 7 runs emulators for NES, SNES, Genesis, and GBA quite nicely; which is about as in depth as I'm willing to get when it comes to mobile gaming.

It depends on the DRM attached to the game, whether or not you allow it to save your log in credentials, and whether or not Steam actually manages to save your log in credentials. The last is only generally a problem if you have more than one computer being served by the same account, which I do.

Probably work

Well, for better or worse, I just preordered one. I have mixed feelings about it's actual use, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for novelty. I also use trackballs exlusively and have one of those nostromo gaming pads, so I'm no stranger to uncanny input methods. It will gather dust proudly in the corner with my copy of CLANG.

If nothing else, it's repeated use will give me some much needed upper arm strength.

Classify "need". The amount of badass from being down in the server room, connecting to local wifi, and being able to portscan/ping/ssh/rdp from the tablet in my hands rather than finding the crash cart and slaving it to a server I already have credentials for is pretty nice. I've also started labelling my servers with QR codes in addition to server name, for which a tablet/phone is pretty handy as well. I can't remember 3 different IP addresses for 50+ servers, and saves me needing another screen in front of me containing the database of IPs.

Mind you, that's admittedly neither my primary use for my tablet, nor something necessary for me to do my job. I got it for Pathfinder PDFs because it's a big toy.

Yeah, I could see this replacing my mouse for casual internet browsing and what have you. I mean, I use a tablet and stylus for drawing things on my computer, so why not?
