This time the third chair is filled with 80 folks as the GenCon 2012 play by mob audience join us for the show!
First we play the upcoming Stronghold Games "Space Cadets" but "Mob style" with the help of Geoff Engelstein & his family. Can that many players take control of starships and battle it out in any kind of organazed way? Listen to find out.
Later Craig and Russ chat about two of their favorite purchases at GenCon this year: Evil Baby Orphanage from Wyrd Miniatures and Star Wars X-Wing from Fantasy Flight Games. S-foils have been locked in attack position as they dive in for a detailed review of both games.
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- When you wish upon a game
- & More
Please let us know what you think of the show!

Great episode. I am super jealous that I STILL have to wait for X-Wing. I kickstarted Evil Baby Orphanage, so that I've got covered.
So, I plan on binging on X-Wing and all of the expansions right out of the gate, but I had a question. Would you recommend an extra set of the game dice?
Does it slow that game that much to have to share the dice that come in the basic set?

Eric Bloom, the lead singer of Blue Oyster Cult, was interviewed by Total Fan Girl in episode 54: http://www.thed6generation.com/webpage/d6g_ep_54_games_for_all_ages_blue_oyster_cult_interview_peter_lipton
The brief debate about the "Number of Rocks Starts to appear on the show" Space Cadet question arose because a listener wanted to classify Marion Call as a rock star. I think she's a fantastic singer, but she doesn't have enough pyro in her shows for rock star status.

Thanks, Russ. I vaguely remembered that TFG had interviewed a famous singer at one point, but it was the haziest of memories.

I really enjoyed the episode while I worked at my desk. You have me definitely sold on both Evil Baby Orphanage and Star Wars X-Wing (though for the latter you had me at hello)
Any recommendations for what to buy to be fully ready to go with X-Wing on release? 1 Starter plus 1 of each Expansion? Or perhaps 2 Starters plus 1 of each expansion?

Well, this is also the source of some debate. You definitely want to get one of everything if you want all the options. i.e. If you don't buy the X-Wing expansion and instead buy two starter boxes you'll never get Wedge. There are also unique Tie pilots in the Tie expansion.
The problem with JUST getting one of everything (which is what I did at Gencon) is that you don't quite have enough imperials to field 100 points, which is the default game size.
So I'd get one of everything, then consider getting a second starter box. That really gives you enough to play 100 points per side easily, and the extra dice and templates do come in handy.
Of course the above all assumes that you are buying enough for two players.

I wasn't at GenCon, but I did go to the Star Wars Celebration down in Orlando, where they had the game for sale (and no 1.5 hour wait). I also agonized about what to pick up, and I ended up with 1 of everything (I had to have Wedge!) I may consider a 2nd starter set as well - but I need to at least get it to the table a few times before I splurge anymore. Also, I'm thinking another Y-Wing may be in order, because having only 1 Y-wing seems odd.
They also had the upcoming expansions out for viewing at the SW Celebration - the Falcon, A-Wing, Tie Interceptor and Slave I. The Fantasy Flight guys talked to me about how they really worked with Lucas Arts to get the scale right on everything...but I have to say, Slave I looked enormous to me. It's about as big as the Falcon, which I didn't expect.
On another topic - what do you guys think of all the new games from Spartan. I actually asked you this over twitter already, but thought you might have more in-depth thoughts here. Dystopian Legions was a surprise, but more surprising to me is what they're doing with Firestorm Invasion - the ground based game in the Firestorm Armada. Breaking it into 3 separate games at 3 different scales (10mm, 15mm and 28mm) seems incredibly ambitious. I'll be honest, I have trouble seeing all of that succeeding, and have some worries about Spartan Games future if this fails.

Well, Firestorm Invasion is put out by their equivalent of Specialist Games, so the risk is probably fairly low. Dystopian Legions seems to be the more ambitious venture.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I've been drooling over this game for so long, and am kicking myself that I did not make it to Gencon this year since it sounds like it was an amazing year.

I'm not familiar with Specialist Games, so I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at. Does that mean it will be low production numbers?

Good episode! I wasn't a fan of the Play By Mob concept earlier, but the Space Cadet session at Gencon really worked as radio.
I also realized how programmed I am to like the original Star Wars and all its products...I have absolutely no need of more new games at the moment, but the thought of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter dogfights had me salivating.
Fun fact, Concussion Missiles (as ship-to-ship missiles rather than the anti-capital ship Proton Torpedoes) were a feature in West End's old Star Wars RPG system - they published tons and tons of books with SW information that they at least partly mined from access to Lucasfilm's SW material. This was years before the original computer game. So I believe the missiles were either in from the start (but not in the films) or invented by the people at West End.

I enjoyed the show. Darn you all to heck for tempting me to buy YET ANOTHER game... but I think I'll resist buying into X-Wing because I won't have many opportunities to play (young children, and therefore no free evenings for the next year or two).

@HokieStone - Specialist Games is what Games Workshop uses to publish their older games, or ones they decide to not actively support. Basically, they wither on the vine or are picked up by the hobby community and thrive there. Games like Blood Bowl, Mordheim, Necromunda, etc.

Well, I can't wait to get my hands on X-Wing, but more importantly, the Falcon.
Still working my way through the episode, but I'm enjoying it so far. The play by mob really worked better than ever this time, and it was fun to be able to play along at home.

Great episode! Now you really have me looking forward to X-wing. It gives me something cool to tell my wife for the Christmas list if I can wait that long.
This years play-by-mob was much more enjoyable to listen to than last year's. The D6G and geek trivia made it more inclusive to the listener.

OK...I'm not sure that helps me understand how the Firestorm Invasion stuff is "less of a risk", then. Will they only put out a very limited number of models, or only make them on demand, or something to that effect? Only go into full scale production if enough people place orders?

It's not so much of a risk because it's just the developers having free reign to work on what ever special project they desire. Spartan already has the infrastructure to rapidly develop 3D models and move them to resin production quickly. The Firestorm Invasion line isn't meant to be mass produced and sold in stores.
Because they've gotten big enough they can devote some resources to working on side projects with little to no risk.

I think I have a problem. I was able to answer all the D6G trivia instantly...
I am tempted to pick up Evil Baby Orphanage except for one thing, the guys on The Gamer's Lounge said that the majority of the games they played took forever as good players can keep the game going almost indefinitely. You guys mentioned this, but have you encountered it at all?
