So I think I'll be getting into warmahordes, starting with the Cygnar starter box. What else should I pick up to have a decent low point army? (At a reasonable budget)

One of the must have models for cygnar is the Journeyman warcaster, 3 extra focus and some pressure off your main caster. And only a few quid too. Beyond that? Some mechanics are normally handy then maybe a squad. How do you want to play beyond a bit more shooty then everyone else?

Do they have anything that is good in CC? Other than that I liked the look of the hunter

There are several melee jacks that are quite good and a few hard-hitting infantry units, but cygnar's infantry tend not to take a hit as well as you would hope, so delivering them to combat can be tricky if you don't have guns thinning out the enemy threats. The stormblade unit is the best melee unit for the faction right now, but they are due plastic resulpts some time in the next 6 months or so.

So the FLGS only had a heavy warjack kit (Avenger/Centurion/Hammersmith) along with the battleforce so I picked it up and am planning on magnetizing it. Was it worth the buy? (other than I love the warjack models)

I've heard good things from the avenger but never seen it used myself. The centurion is a solid jack but slower than frozen toffee (it is described as being a Khador Jack in disguise) but benefits from buffs quite nicely. The hammersmith? Beatstick pure and simple.

If you haven't checked out this site already try http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/mkiiCygnar it provides a good summary of most/all units and is worth consulting if you're just starting out.

The avenger and centurion both seem like good choices for a new player. All three of these jacks suffer from lower-than-normal speed and accuracy though, so bring some of those accuracy buffs cygnar does so well. Also, it is a gorgeous kit and I am a bit envious of you right now.

The avenger will play well with anything that makes him hit more reliably. It is an interesting jack since you can put all your effort into making it hit then all your other models attacking targets near its own will hit much easier.

The centurion is a good defensive option and helps you get a bit more board control. The high armor and no-charge ability add up to make it very durable and it is an ace in scenarios.

The hammersmith has some amazing melee potential, but as stated before, it is very slow so you can only really use it if you have movement spells or as a counterthreat.

For an easy upgrade to 15 points get the Black 13. They are 4 points and also not alot of cash/money. It is really hard to go wrong with a squire as well. Most cygnar casters really benefit from having him along.

JWC is a nice model, but you really need somethign for it to buff and/or control. Just tossing one in to a list doesn't help. It needs a purpose.

If you want a melee unit stormblades are probably the most common way to go. With the UA and some buffs they are quite deadly. But precursors and even swordknights have their place, too. And then there are mercenary options to consider.

Truthfully though. Play the battle box a little and then work on picking a caster you really like first. What you buy depends greatly on the caster.

It is a funny thing about Cygnar, we are a "ranged" faction that doesn't really like to play at range. Our best jacks like being up close and personal. Anything on an Ironclad chassis has MAT7 and MV5. And our Elite infantry are all good if not great at melee. The trick is in the Caster and supporting cast. We can buff ranged (Deadeye, Snipe, Explosivo, etc. and several Feats) slightly better than melee. But ask anyone who's ever been charged by a proper unit of Stormblades buffed by eStryker's Positive Charge spell, on a supporting warjack, how well their unit/jack/beast survived.

So go thru the book and look for whichever caster you think is coolest and then decide which units and solos have the best synergy with his/her spells and feat.

And, yes. The Avenger/Centurion/Hammersmith kit is an excellent choice. Try the Avenger with a Snipe caster and watch your enemies fall over like drunks standing on marbles.

"As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely just a result of wishful thinking." Pete Haines
For the love of the Emperor people, it's a TURRET. There is no such thing as a turrent!
