Hey guys,

I wanted to build a small space marine force, simply based around a chapter and it's special character, but the only background I know from space marines is from the battle novels,

It can be from any chapter, aside from grey knights, i just have a dislike to them. I'm quite fond of blood angels, but I hate the constant mention to mephiston!

So just your guys opinions

I'm partial to vulkan hestans fluff and rule set. But another really cool one IMO is commander Dante of the blood Angels. He's the oldest living space marine. That's pretty cool IMO.

I'm partial to a DC horde led by Astorath, but I also love Belial's DW and Lysanders gunline

Personally in terms of cool factor when it comes to SM SC's I'm partial to Cantor and Shrike and they've got some pretty interesting fluff. Ulrik the Slayer is also pretty cool too. The problem with so many SM SC's is that they either come off as overdone/fanficy (e.g. Draigo, Calgar, Sanguinor), or they're just so common and clearly abuseable as most opponents aren't going to see the effort you put into making a fluffy force and instead are going to see another bandwagon hopper (e.g. Vulkan, Mepthiston, etc).

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Well I suppose if that army is competitive after I've made it, it would just be a bonus, but il be making the army, almost to a scenario. Why do so many people use Vulkan?

In 5E at least, he made all the stuff you'd take tons of (undercosted TH/SS termi's, lots of meltas and flamers) regardless even better for an irrelevant increase and was better than an equivalently geared Captain as well. Hence why he became almost ubiquitous amongst C:SM armies, especially in the first half of 5E.

Now with 6E the melta isn't as vital, but he's still essentially a "I make half your weapons better for no real downside" crutch.

I really need to read up on what all the special characters actually do on the table but fluffwise, I really like Kayvaan Shrike.

Not sure if he'd count as SM or CSM, but I think Cypher and the Fallen Angels is a really cool army theme. The model is quite good as well.

Deffdred, you must be proud of your Chaplain Dreadnought, I think I have seen you post that picture a million times . But seriously though that is one sharp looking dread.

I like the background and fluff for Pedro Kantor so I guess I would choose him. In addition, from a rules standpoint I do not think he is overpowered and seems fairly pointed for what he brings to the table.

Sevrin Loth. He's what happens when Forge World's balance pendulum swings a bit too far in the good direction.

8000 points of XI Legion the Space Vagabonds, they can adapt their tactics to represent any and every Legion and Chapter as needed because they were created by the Emperor to be the ultimate tactical power. They have faked their disappearance in order to infiltrate every part of the conflicts in the galaxy.

8000 points of Tau/Craftworld Eldar/Necron because the Space Vagabonds can also emulate their wargear and tactics.

Victories: ALL
Losses: NONE (My armies have the psychic ability to conjure a cataclysmic storm whenever they are about to lose. This allows the Space Vagabonds to teleport away while releasing power waves that destroys the battlefield and so every battle is a victory)

Since you mentioned Blood Angels, I'll go with Lemartes. Any Death Company squad with a chaplain in them is ridiculously powerful, and Lemartes is a beast all on his own now. After suffering 1 wound, he will get 8 S8 I6 attacks on the charge. The downside here is that he is not a special character per se, but an upgrade character for a DC squad.

If we are including FW, then Lugft Huron is awesome, as are all of the salamanders, and of course Tyberos "jazz hands"

Lemartes seems awesome. Could you make an army based around death company or chaplains??

You could, but it wouldn't be very competitive. Death Company are very expensive units and they are non-scoring, but if you include Astorath in your army than you can take as many squads of them as you can fit in your FOC. You can also field 1 Death Company Dreadnought for every 5 Death Company marines.
