I'm wondering, how many core units do you need for an army of whfb? I don't have the rule book yet and want to start ogres. I know that you need an army leader. Any replies would be most appreciated!

25% or more of your army total has to be core and you need a general. The general has the highest LD, if multiples are the same, you just pick one. So you could have whatever is the smallest # of Ogres a unit size allows. I think 3? And that could be your army. You just pick one of the exactly the same models and say one is the general because he has shiniest teeth.

It would be a pretty boring army.

Unfortunately, it's tough to give you a specific number for how many troops you need to start playing.

The "core" requirement is percentage based, not number based. You need to have at least 25% of your total points spent in Core. So, if you're playing a 1000 point game, at least 250 points need to be taken from Core.

Thanks loads for the replies! I'll probably go with a unit of iron guts to fill out the core long with my bulls.

The smallest possible ogre army is 400 points taking a single naked butcher, and 3 units of 3 ogre bulls with xhw. 399 points total, I don't imagine anyone throwing a fit over that 1 point for sake of composition.

So 10 models is the lowest I can come up with.

I forgot you need 3 units minimum. So you could have 3 units of 3 Ogres. Or some combination with other Core like gnoblars.

Indeed, the list I made had just the 9 ogres and butcher, which is the lowest model count, but any of those units could be swapped out for anything of equal value.
