Been having a break from the hobby, always done space marines though (about 12 years now) but tried a new style with this guy. Instead of the weathered look (see previous gallery) i thought about a clean crisp look.

What so you all think?

That's beautiful. Very well-executed. Are you doing a whole army in this style?

there's smoke in my iris, but I painted a sunny day on the insides of my eyelids

Possibly, im undecided so was wondering what other people think. If everyone thinks it looks naff im not putting in all the hours in to paint an army up!

Very clean and nicely done. You could do a really sick highlighting with this model, not the standard GW thick lightning blue line, but just using the blue you have and with tiny bits of white added to it and very watered down so that its lighter but not thick.
I will take some pictures of a model I just did this with - it was in black, but would look great on here too in blue.

What's your technique for the black lines and being so clean?

Really nice and neat! I would also like to see a and highlight on this, just to give the model a bit more pop.

wow thank you all so much for you positive comments!

I thought hard about line highlighting this figure, the problem is im not 100% happy with my standard of highlight and i did not want to ruin the paint job by having horrid highlights. Im always practising though and i plan to go back and highlight all my older models when im happy with my technique.

To paint the armour i do this:

1- grey primer (halfords plastic primer)
2- whole model thinned army painter ultramarine blue
3- All metalic areas, eyes, jump pack, shoulder trim, straps etc are painted given a wash at this point.
4 - blue wash then black wash (GW ones)
5 - Two thin coats of AP blue again taking care to cut up to but not over the edges of the panels leaving a black line
6- Decals with micro sol and set then varnished in
7- Testors dullcote airbrushed on

I actually like the decision not to highlight it. It looks like a stylistic choice more than that you weren't confident in your ability... don't tell people that! Just let them think you chose not to highlight it. Looks very cartoonish, and it would be cool to see a whole army in this style.

That's great. First word that came to my mind was "crisp". Very well done.

In a galaxy far far away.

Very nice clean paint job that's what I'm looking to do with my Imperial Fists, make hem nice and clean almost off the assembly line and entering their first battle

I like it.

Very simple in terms of lack of highlighting / weathering etc. but it looks really really good.

Eye of Terra.

Nicely done!

I use a similar blue, but I have minor "wear" on the paint to give it a used look and my panel lines are much thinner. Personal taste I guess.

Your miniature is a very good example of smoothly applied paint over a properly prepared figure.

Kudos!

I like the cel shaded take. This is very reminiscent of Nards Nids.

I say do an entire army like this. It'll look awesome on the table.

It's spelled "cavalry." NOT "calvary."

Great job! You did a wonderful job with the details, and you didn't go overboard trying to highlight and shade every tiny nook and cranny. (Since I find that lighting effects will often be provided by the light itself.) You achieved a lovely matte color which helps bring home that heraldric look which works so well with the Space Marines.

Definately - I'm liking the "graphic novel" look so I say go with it

That's the link that taught me how to paint very subtle highlights on black, I see no reason why this wouldn't work on Blue as well.
Hope this helps!

Very nicely done, I like the overall pop of the model. How many layers did you put down to get that smooth soft look?

Very nice and technically excellent. I do agree that there's not something that catches the eye, but:

a) There doesn't always have to be, they are soldiers after all
b)I think the lack of pop is really the fault of the "blue and a bit" coloration that the ultras were given. I wanted a two tone color for my marines, but I couldn't pull it off technically so I added a third to make up for it. You're not in that position because you made a two tone marine look fantastic
